a mixture of problems......HELP

recently my car has developed a strange ticking noise under the bonnet, only from about 2000-3000 revs. im also getting quite a dramatic increase in fuel consumption. reset my ECU about 1000 miles ago, and had cambelt changed about 2 months ago. any ideas??
its the 1.6 by the way

Does the noise change when its hot or cold?

Age of car and milage, how many miles since the cambelt was done?

cambelt was done around 2000-ish miles ago. the sound is there if it is hot or cold. 1998 50K miles

Hmm.. many possible problems. My first guess would be its cambelt related. I'd get the belt tension, tensioner itself and the cam timing checked.

hi tom,
not sure it is the belts now although the fan belt is whirring a bit. the ticking seems to be behind the dash somewhere on the drivers side but only between 1500-3000 revs and when the clutch is engaged. maybe something to do with the speedo? ive never noticed it before though and it is getting louder with more use.

Speedo is electronic.

The PAS pump is directly infront of the driver as is the alternator.

Is it a cable or hydraulic clutch?

I've got the same noise, only when I apply power and the ticking doesnt change speed when I accelerate, so I have discounted anything in the engine. I dont have a clue, and it doesnt seem to have affected the car at all, so for the moment, I am ignoring it. Seems to happen on cold mornings.
