Captain Slow, whose attitudes to motoring closely mirror my own, is smitten with the 100HP Panda, and would like one. All we have to do now is get him on our side for the campaign for the MultiJet 4x4, and , perhaps a top spec diesel Eleganza...
But journalists do not like to be seen siding with 'political' opinions, so maybe there is no hope. And the Good Captain has many times dissed diesels as being slow and smelly. Ummmmm..... That's so last year, James.... Didn't you used to run a Bentley?
James May! As a Panda owner we need you on our side to shake Fiat UK out of their torpor. We need 'biffabout' city cars as you call them, but we also need sporty models, diesel 4x4's and a diesel Eleganza. If Mercedes can produce them why can't Fiat UK?
And, given the parlous state of Fiat's finances, they need an expansion in the Panda range to prop up the somewhat less desirable Fiat models..
The Panda is one of the few 'Cars For the People' currently being produced, an ethos that goes back to the first Fiat Topolino. But the people are more sophisticated than they were in 1936. Fiat UK should give us the models we want, instead of the models some bloke in Slough thinks we need.
Help us in this quest, O Captain. Then we'll forgive you for driving a Bugatti Veyron at silly miles per hour on the telly the other night. The future of everyday motoring does not lie with Bugatti. And when are going to see another Panda feature on Top Gear? Eh?
Attaboy.
