I'm new here, so Greetings.

My '98 MkI Punto has just failed its MOT grand style. Over £1,500 to put it right, or £295 trade in value. So I've got a bog standard 3dr 02 MkII 1.2 to tide me over while I find something better, probably a new Citroën C4 diesel.

The MkII is such a let down, probably because its engine seems powerless after 8 years with the twin cam 16v, even after 120K miles.

MOT Refusal Certificate listed:

  1. Both McPherson struts worn and weakened.
  2. Steering column top bearing excessively worn.
  3. Both rear dampers have negligible effect.
  4. Insecure fuel system components (pump?).
  5. Driver's seat belt defective.
  6. Driver's seat insecure.
  7. CO emissions excessive
  8. Exhaust emissions outside limits at fast idle (suspect Lambda and Cat.)
  9. Coroded rear brake pipes.

Also:
Leaking water pump.
Radiator fan defective.

Otherwise the car's fine!

MOT Refusal Certificate listed:

  1. Both McPherson struts worn and weakened. scrappy £15 each
  2. Steering column top bearing excessively worn. column from scrappy £15
  3. Both rear dampers have negligible effect. scrappy £10 each
  4. Insecure fuel system components (pump?). wont be pump maybe loose pipe?
  5. Driver's seat belt defective. £10-15 from scrappy
  6. Driver's seat insecure. do up bolts
  7. CO emissions excessive
  8. Exhaust emissions outside limits at fast idle (suspect Lambda and Cat.)
last 3 bottle of fuel injector cleaner and a good thrashing
  9. Coroded rear brake pipes. free its a recall item

Also:
Leaking water pump. £35 may aswell get new timing belt kit at same time £150 garage price
Radiator fan defective. proably sensor switch or new fan needed

dunno where the £1.500 comes from:confused:

About £700 for parts, £400 labour +VAT. Plus 2 new tyres, another £100. And front disks at minimum thickness. Another £100 with pads.

I gave up going to scrap yards when I was I kid. I learned that the parts you needed which were knackered, were also knackered on cars in the scrap yard.

The rear brake pipe was replaced a few yew ago, but the part that's corroded is not that part.

I've no complaints - had it since new and done 120K miles. This is first time there's been any serious problem. It's falling apart.

Is that fiat prices

First thing is dont use fiat :D You might as well p*ss 5 pound notes away

The other thing...welcome :D (y)

I've now got a wimpy low spec 02 plate 1.2 MkII, but it makes me realise how sloppy the 98R MkI 85ELX was.

I'm now looking to get a (diesel) Citroën C4 or Golf now, probably when the 56 plates come out. Ten years of Puntos is enough.
