General 850T Garage find after 24 years. Soon back on the road

My dad had an 850T van in the late 70's it hadn't done that many miles and if I remember correctly had a few mechanical problems.

The main problem though was with the dreaded 'tin worm' and although it was only 3 years old it looked more like it was 30 years old.

Living in Scotland with salt on the roads for most of the year put paid to most cars...Fiats being the ones to suffer the most.

Loved that little van!!

Been bizzy working on the bed today, I have used a rock and role bed from a VW camper, it's taken some thinking as it's made to fit a much bigger car.

You may notice that I don't fit, I still need to find some old cabinets so I can un fold some wood out then put the foam over the lot to sleep on.

This week The Fiat has seen the light of day and has been taken to a garrage to get the timing set up corectley, also this garrage is going to give me a quote to paint it.
see photos.

Almost seems a shame to paint it, it has a nice patina.

Yes Mike the thourght has crossed my mind, but its got little patches where the paint is thin. So the last thing i want is for it to turn into rot. Its just that this has never been welded, and curently wants no welding, so it would be nice to have a nice clean one.

I've fallen out of touch with this thread, that looks a lovely little van! have to day I'd be tempted not to paint! it does look very good from pics! though I accept pictures always do that well. Was a great little find. Whereabouts in the country are you, I noticed an AV reg car in one of the pics....

Hi Alastair
I have been polishing it this week i have to say now that you have both said not to paint it i will keep it in mind. But i must stress that the photos are makeing it look much better than it dose in real life.
Never the less i have been blown away by how nice the colour is, its comming up in such a nice cherry red.

You will see i have polished the front door and middle pannel.
So pleased with how its looking

Ah not far from me! I meant there was was a car in the photo of where you picked it up with an AV number plate which is bury st edmunds, hence I was putting two and two together and thinking you maybe in east Anglia

Looking great for its polish, though I completely appreciate what you say about cameras being kind! You mustn't be swayed by others though, it's your car, so your rules!

Bet it raised some eye brows at work!

Looks great well done! What is your van like to drive? mine still has some small jobs to do and then it on the road, but after working on it for 2 years I just cant wait to drive her!
