Whilst on the motorway 5th suddenly disappeared. At the services realised couldn't get reverse either due to the fact that the stick wouldn't move to the right. I now have reverse but whilst the stick will move to 5th position only get a whining noise. Car going into the garage tomorrow but wondering if anyone had any ideas? I also heard that 5th gear work can be undertaken without removing the gearbox. Its a 2007 model 1.9 diesel.

To paraphrase another forum member "5th gear is added on" i.e. It's outside the main gearbox case and can be worked/replaced relatively easily. (Search 5th gear replacement in this forum)
Having said that, many Multipla gear selection issues are down to the cables/selector mechanism on top of the gearbox. You need to remove the battery and it's tray and you can then access the selector mechanism, disconnect the cables and try selecting manually.

Don't I remember seeing something (perhaps on this forum?) about debris collecting in the gearbox end casing - the bit that houses the 5th gear set - and preventing full travel of the selector mechanism? Cleaning out the crud restored the 'box to full function.

Having said that, I've done a couple of searches on here but can't find the thread. Perhaps I was dreaming.....

Ok thanks all for the info, I'll get the garage to check the linkages today and now at least i know the box doesn't have to be dropped:) Let you know later

The garage reckon its the box:( But when I get a few hours I'm going to disconnect the cables as suggested and check it out. I might be lucky:)
Watch this space!

Well at last after checking the linkage it narrowed down to the gears:confused: On taking 5th apart found the hub had broken into 4 pieces:) Priced it up and comes in around £30.
The nut on the shaft was loose, held only by the crimping on the collar and so is there some free play when assembling and if so how much? Would be grateful for some advice.
Can't thank you all enough for the info I've already had, as without it I would probably have left it to the garage to sort out and have been out of pocket by £££££££££.

Cheers
