General 5th Gear

Hi, have a 2007 diesel multipla. Whilst on holiday 5th gear disappeared on the motorway. Found out in the services that reverse was also gone as I was unable to move the stick across to select either 5th or reverse. A few days later I was able to select the 2 but only reverse actually works, 5th just gives a whining noise. The garage is going to have a good look at the linkages tomorrow (Wed) but I was interested if anyone had any ideas. Also I have read that 5th can be tackled without removing the box. Is this the case for this model? Any help would be appreciated.

Erm how about listing this is the right section? A multipla in the grande Punto section?
