Hi Guys im a newbie on here
ive just bought a 2nd hand fiat ducato van which cosmetically needs a little work which im sorting out now, however i have noticed that when i go to put it in 5th gear there is a slight crunch, any ideas on what the problem could be?

Crunching it the 5th gear syncro is worn/damaged. Box was originally a 4 speed design 5th gear was added to an external housing and sometimes suffered from oil starvation with long periods in 5th. Solution was to overfill he gearbox with 2.7l. I would drain the box and refill with a quality gearoil first as its probably full of metal particles now anyway and see how you get on. If it still needs changing then its a relatively easy job for a decent mechanic as its outside the main box.

if my van as been stood idle for a couple of days i dont go into 5th until i have been running for approx 8 to 10 miles , or if on motorway slow down a little on a hill and select 4th gear this allows the oil to fling up in the gear box and along the oil gallery to the outside tin cover near side of engine behind front wheel were it drips onto the 5th gear..

We own an 89 Ducato. We got the gearbox dipstick level re-notched due to the know oil level issues & topped accordingly. Great source of info & parts is JK Towers site
