Technical 500X "Change Oil" reset

MES should be able to reset a service light.

On something like 500X on newer cars servicing can be dictated by oil degradation sensors so if it's telling you it needs oil then it probably needs a full service. Then the service light and oil degradation sensor needs to be reset in software.

I have never heard of pressing the throttle 3 times working on anything.

It’s a pain in the ass, that warning. Mine wasn’t reset properly at the last service. Took it back to the garage and it took them nearly an hour to reset it, but now it’s off by 7000kms. My next service is due in about 3000km so I’ll see if they can get them both reset properly.

WARNING / CAUTION: If you have a diesel engine with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) then the Oil Change *MUST* be reset otherwise the engine ECU will eventually refuse to do DPF regeneration/cleaning cycles and the DPF will eventually clog up to a state that may not be recoverable by forced regeneration.

Oil Degradation: As such there is not an oil quality sensor to determine oil quality/degradation. Instead the ECU uses its existing sensors/systems to calculate/determine how hard the oil has been challenged. So oil temp, mileage, engine loading, speeds etc. (I don't know the full list of monitored parameters us) are used in the determination. Also for cars with DPFs then the number of regens I believe is taken into account as regens are very stressful.

On the MultiAir petrol engines the oil reset is no the UniAir/MultiAir systems can reset some operating parameters. On the petrol engines I'm not sure what real effect of not resetting the oil change has. I do know however that with the Fiat offical wiTECH kit (used by dealers) *earlier* versions of the software did not have this reset function. This was commented on/confirmed by my independent Fiat specialist who has both wiTECH and MES.

wiTECH: Apparently now that Fiat/PSA etc merger has taken place new diagnostic kit will probably be rolled out across the dealers. This could mean that we see some wiTECH units coming on the market.

There's a couple of different warnings in my Sport (1.0ltr).

There's the regular service indicator doodah ("Service due in 365 days/9000 miles" with a respective countdown) and then a "Change Oil" warning which seems to be calculated by the car's brains depending on how you drive it.

My old beast gave me the "Change Oil" a little bit shy of 9000 miles (around 8700.. although it does very little city driving and hardly any journeys less than 20 miles...) so I haven't worked out why/how it calculates when it's "Change Oil" time, yet.

My dealer re-set the service interval (back to 9000 miles and 12 months) even though the car was on 8750 or something... but forgot to re-set the "Change Oil" warning so I had to take it back for that. The "Change Oil" warning doesn't have any "progress" or "condition" indicator that I've seen.. it just appears one day.
