Hi

Looking for some help please.

Basically the partners car is a 500X diesel, 42K, had it from new. It was running fine, then today after a short journey it suddenly died. Completely dead apparently message on the dashboard was start stop unavailable. Now wont respond to keypad or manual key so cant get in. No lights on dash at all. Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like a completely dead battery. How long after the short journey was the car left before this happened?

If the battery was marginal and with the cold temperatures then the internal electric heater would have come on. That, lights, recharging after starting etc. may have been just too much especially if parking lights were enabled as well. Or a major MAXI power fuse has blown.

Sounds like you are going to have to find a way to release the bonnet or get into the cabin. Just hope the deadlocks were not set.

I must put a secret remote cable release on my 500X. I put one on the Barchetta's boot as that is a totally 100% metal sealed area when the boot cable release fails.

Thanks mechanic came out today, confirmed it was the battery had to access the bonnet release mechanism by jacking up the car and releasing it from underneath. Apparently Fiat are 1 of the few car manufacturers that don`t make a car with a left hand key access. Thanks for your pointers.

Come to think of it does not your key fob have an emergency mechanical key? My 500X 2015 does!

It does. Key fob doesnt work in this situation it deadlocks, AA couldnt get in hence having to go in from underneath. Fiat are 1 of the few car manufacturers that only have 1 door manual key accessible.

I need to check this out *again* (when the warmer/summer weather comes around again) on my 500X because I thought I did this a while ago.

Background:

Before my 1st Fiat Dealer Service you could only engaged the deadlocks by double pushing the key fob lock key. Pressing or double pressing the door handle button did not engage the deadlocks

After 1st Service and BCU program update pressing the door handle button locked and engaged the deadlocks. Bad idea IMHO. Most of the time when not touring I'm the sole occupant of my 500X and when shopping, filling up etc. it was just routine habit to press door handle button whilst turning and walking away. I did this only to arrive back at the car with a very upset wife who had been deadlocked in the car. Could have been kids, wife, parents, and an electrical fire/emergency happening whilst I was off paying for fuel!

From that day, apart from testing, I've turned Keyless Passive Entry Off (also protects against relay theft attacks) and just use the keyfob.

I'm sure I checked at the time that the Emergency Key would release the deadlocks BUT I did this with a good battery. Not checked but possibly the deadlocks are all on separate electric only solenoids.
