Hi

Not long had our 500c. It does hardly any miles and the garage are saying it needs a cam belt.

If I understand correctly, the 8V 1.2 motors are non interference so won't cause damage if the belt does go.

Question is how do I know if it is a non interference (8V?) or not. The dealer won't help clarify :>(.

Thanks
Nat

I'm not too gen'd up on the newer cars, but although I'm 95% certain that the 500 uses the 1.2 8v FIRE engine, it's also fitted with VVT essentially negating the "non interference" aspect. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon to confirm though.

Edit: Just found this - https://www.fiatforum.com/leisure-lounge/308995-1-2-8v-vvt.html?p=3092172

Hi,
Lore has it that MOST 500's are no longer "SAFE" engines,
TBH - the job is relatively simple and inexpensive,

the recommended thing is to change the whole train ;
the belt, idler pulley and waterpump,

budget @£200

guide here;https://www.fiatforum.com/500-guides/420525-replacing-water-pump-timing-belt-1-2l-engine.html

even the SAFE version will render the car motionless in the middle of the road - on the belt failing ,

so potentially highly dangerous..as well as inconvenient..,
being trailered home COULD cost more than the service job..,
