I've had my 1.3JTD Sport since September and have put nearly 6000 miles on it so I thought people might be interested in my experiences so far.

- I've already done my first mod (added a boot light - very easy and I don't know why all models aren't just fitted with one as standard since the hole in the plastic trim is already there.

- Had my replacement washer jets when the central jet cylinders popped out over the cold winter

- Had my replacement mic after the Blue&Me lady went bananas on me:

"Call Chris"
"Call Ray now?"
"No. NO! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
*dialling begins anyway*

It's a bit embarrassing to explain to someone that you car's just called them by accident. Luckily the new mic has fixed the issue, but she still ignores me saying yes when I try to call certain numbers, so I've taken to just using the steering wheel controls and going through the recent call list.

- Fuel economy has been fantastic! Even my normal nutter commuter driving style and long motorway speed trips haven't managed to get the average mpg below around 50, and 60mpg is easily achievable on a long trip if you don't push it.

- The lively back axle took some getting used to after my armchair of an old Rover 420. Cornering over bumps can be "interesting", but at least the 500 doesn't suffer from ocean liner understeer like the Rover :D. Otherwise the 500 is very manouvreable and fun to drive.

- The doors are ENORMOUS. Although the car is easy to park anywhere being relatively narrow, you still need to aim for the widest space possible if you want to get the door fully open and get out in a dignified manner. This is particularly hard when you're not particularly tall and have the seat quite far forward.

- Seating position is very high. It took a few months of aching leg muscles to get used to having my right foot fully flexed to reach the accelerator. Even now I find my big toe goes dead on long journeys

- The 500 is surprisingly roomy inside. You won't fit a full luggage set in the boot (or as one online review said "I love my 500 but I find it very hard to get my wheelchair in "), but I've never found myself really struggling, and if things get too tight, you can always drop the seats.

- I find the radio/media player controls a little counter-intuitive. I don't understand why track information (track title, x/y position of track on album, length of track to go etc) isn't displayed on the central display (rather than just MEDIA PLAYER) instead of popping up with the next track name when you're in the middle of scrolling through the other available display options and giving you no other track information. If there's a way to change this and I've overlooked it, please set me straight!

- The car is CUTE! I caught sight of myself approaching the big glass windows of the local M&S the other day and just had to pause and admire. I only bought a new car because the 500 is the first car in absolutely years that I liked the looks of and could actually see myself driving.

I think that about covers it! Hopefully this will prove useful to anyone considering buying a 500, and I'd like to know how it compares with other people's experiences.

Nice review!(y)

I felt obliged to reply because of the comments about the doors, haha! Very true. Popping into narrow spaces is fine but sometimes if you don't leave enough spaces between the car to your right then it can be fun and games.

Also - spotting yourself in a window - yep I do the same sometimes. My only problem is I'll have a cheeky look sideways when going past shop windows sometimes:eek:...gives me wife a bit of a scare! I always argue that I know what I'm doing...

Nice review and glad you are enjoying your 500. Mine has also just completed first 5,000 miles.

Agree with the door width and also the fact they are quite 'springy' and bounce back easily onto you. Catches my 86 year old father every time:)

I have also had Blue&Me mic replaced and also the climate control fan back in January which unfortunately has just started the whining noise again so will be going back for a 2nd replacement soon.

Your comments about the Blue&Me lady made me laugh. I get exactly the same thing - she picks a completely random person which bears no resemblance to the name I have said. She has a preference for 'caroline' and like you, it was getting embarrassing having to explain to my friend why she was getting so many missed calls from me (or the car). She constantly cuts me off and will only register 'yes' if I say 'yeeeees'. All part of the fun.

I adore my car despite the little niggles and do not regret getting her at all.

If she dials the wrong person just hold down the telephone button and it disconnects the call. RTFM FTW :)

Yes, I have read the manual and do know how to do that:)

Trouble is the call sometimes goes through before the telephone button cranks itself into action and disconnects.

and, as is the case with my car, not a single problem with the DPF.

What's the DPF? I haven't been on here long enough or had the car long enough to learn all the acronyms.

In that case, may I continue not to need to worry about it enough to know the acronym :D

hi ive just recently taken delivery of my second 500 but this time i went for the diesel sport with the newer engine in 95bhp and she is like a little rocket , ive added xenons headlights and want to drive about at nite, pass shop windows so i can look at her , my blue and me picks and chooses what music she likes which sometimes is embarrisin  but wouldnt change her my other half got a new golf gtd and everyone looks at mine and they say how cute she is and how much more room she has than a mini :slayer:

Sorry to resurrect this thread after so long, but there's something I forgot to add to my review... THE HEATER! Who designed the vents so that you were mostly warm except for a melted left ankle??? Would it not have been possible to put the footwell vent somewhere else for a slightly more balanced output?

Could be worse, could be the Stilo, where, no matter how much heat you set to the footwell, you still had a frozen iceblock of a foot! ;)

Now that's not strictly true - if you set the fan to speed 3 with the heater on full power and drive from Oxford to Manchester, by the time you reach Manchester your foot should just be getting warm - i tried it ;)
