Technical 4x4 engine bay refurb.

Got a bit more done today............

Should have the other side finished tomorrow along with the arch liners. I also have to try and repair the mudflaps, the metal parts on one of them have rusted away :(, then it can go back on its wheels.

I decided to paint the centre of the disc, not original but it will stop it being brown in a couple of months.

The plan was to take this to Brooklands on Saturday so I booked the mot for 3pm today.

1pm today and the fluids were all in and I was ready to start it. Can't believe that the last time I tried that was over six months ago .
Anyway, turned the key and nothing :( I had put the wrong wire to the starter motor solenoid . Try again and engine spins beautifully but won't fire :( no fuel in the filter. I figured the fuel pump would be fine once the system was primed so I took off the return pipe and used the airline to blow into the tank, almost straight away the fuel filter filled up and I was ready to try again.
This time it fired a couple of times just before the carb overflowed with fuel :(. I figured the float needle had seized up from kicking around doing nothing for so long, so off came the top of the carb and sure enough, seized needle. By the time I'd sorted this I had half an hour left before I had to leave for the mot station, so I was very pleased to have it finally burst in to life :D

All that was now left to do was fit the front bumper, grille, front lights, air filter and spare wheel. No time to set the timing or carb so off I went hoping the engine tune was close enough to pass the emissions.

4pm, one mot certificate :D, so glad I didn't give up.

Tomorrow will be mostly cosmetics, then it will have to do. After Brooklands I will still have a few more jobs to do but as these don't fall under the heading of this thread I'd better start a fresh 'Members motors' one for everything else.

Not such a good day today. Cleaned out and set up the carb twice today and still have the poor running problem. As a result I wasn't able to finish all the final jobs and don't feel confident that it will get to Brooklands and back without problems, it may be ok but rather than taking the chance I will be going in Gavin's MK1.

Anyway the engine bay is pretty much done now. I do have a few bits I'm going to have to paint, some of the items that were soda blasted have lost thier plating so now, after six months they are starting to rust. I'm not going to re-plate these items as it's too involved so painting a similar colour is the best option.

As it's as good as done here are some final pics.........

shame about the rough running, and now you have to slum it in that tatty mk1 eh:p;) could be worse.
Still looks stunning though. Not sure I'm going to make it to any shows this year, too embarrassed now:eek:

Come on Andrew, make Stanford at least. Park next to Jon's 750 and you'll be fine :p.

Sorry Jon, couldn't resist it, and after you went to all that trouble to bring those wheels for me too.

Lol. Still she returned 45.5mpg on the 330 mile fill up on the way home and completed the land speed record along the A14 after I put the wrong address into sat nav and having to make up time, I don't think the MPG will be as good on the next fill up, and it took 90min for me hearing to return, but at least I had working satnav and music thanks to Dragon Man and his help with a loose connection on my alternators wiring, and urchin for lending the tools to retify this.
