Hi,
As the subject line reads, car whines while in 5th and occasionally pops out of 5th when coasting, or off throttle/load. No grinding noises (besides the typical clunk/rattle at idle), and box has oil.

any ideas?

regards,
zuch

Hi Zuch, does it feel like it goes into 5th securely? Does it whine at any speed? Was the box replaced at all?

The bad news this box will need a strip down  It sounds at the moment that it is a repairable unit but only if work is carried out soon. The problem will be and I'll stand corrected is the sincro for 5th gear being beggered it should not jump out with or without load on the box:cry:

Thanx for the reply,

Yes, it whines at speeds you'd be using 5th in....
Bummer....

thanx,
zuch
P.S Did you by any chance see my post on the general section.. wrt chassis numbers?

I'm not familiar with the specific design of the Fiat cogs, but synchro's are there to help you engage gear, not keep the gears in mesh, so I doubt it's the synchro rings. More likely to be worn dogs on the sliding gears, I'd have thought.

Thinking about it - if it's doing it off load then I would suspect something sloppy in the gearchange linkage that keeps the selector forks in position.

Either way to sort it out that box would have to come out and opened up oil or no oil its still can be sorted at a cost my last 4x4box £350 and they removed it and put it back plus I paid for a new clutch kit and had that fitted at the same time.(y)

Thanx for the response....
That's my feeling...
My, albeit limited, experience w/ boxes (volvo), was that there was spring loaded detents I think they were called, that kept the gear engaged. Slop anywhere, part. in bearings and such put less pressure on the detent, thus popping out...
I dont know... I will check the linkages for slop bending though...

As you say, sadly whichever it is will involve a fair bit of work:(
But having read other peoples experiences of recon boxes, I'd be inclined to look at it myself in the first instance, as it might be something quite obvious once it's apart. After all why pay someone several hundred pounds to bugger it up when you can bugger it up yourself for nothing:D
