General 4x4 2 month challange

Both looking good! Someone had obviously had enough of the twin choke carb on the green one...super problematic so not suprised (and not the first mk1 4x4 I've seen with that carb fitted instead!).

I emptied the shed today but I've had no luck finding that carpet...can only think that was missing off the scrapper I stripped of parts as well. I think the problem is they often get used as vans / farm vehicles before they get to the friendly restorer and they loose the rear seats and upholstery.

Look forward to the updates!

Si

Its not the original carb then?
I'm half way though taking the engine out the green one at the moment, I'll have a look at the carb on that!

What's the issue with the twin choke?

Edit, thanks for looking, I'm off out tomorrow to check out scrap yards as well, thanks for the complement but they both look horrific! I can see past a lot of the issues but most can't. That said I had another panda fan pu up today to have a look!

Ahhh! 903 engine just bored out! now i know!

know that feel with the mice.. project fallout is a mess. even the speedo cable had been stripped of all its plastic coating!

have you squirted some WD-40 down the spark plug holes? just leave it to sit in there, not like it can harm anything.

once you have done it, stick it in 5th gear and try to turn the engine over by pushing the car. (5th is the easiest gear to turn the engine over in.. ive had plenty of experience with sized bike and garden machine engines ;) )

just got to hope something like the cam chain has not snapped. i have, however never heard of the OHV engine ever snapping a chain... leads me to wonder if the ohv engine is an non-interface engine.. have to look that up.

was that the only rust on the scuttle panel? if so you got off good! no windscreen to take out! (y)

these videos are very good! keep them up!
i hope i have started a new craze :D

I tried wd40 then atf, then brake fluid and left it for 3 days.
Its not moving, I do plan on stripping it but I think it will end up sending most of it off to be reworked. I haven't seen many of the mk1 engine about? Does it share it with anything else in the fiat, seat or Alfa line up?

Last question, are these a 2 pack paint? I can't see any clear coat. I just wanted to check before I orderd

Erm, well I guess there is a chance that Fiat gave up with the weber dmtr twin choke but I am reasonably sure that is a carb from a 903cc 2wd (looking at your video @7:35)

It should be like this one:

The problems I've had is the jets blocking, they are very complex inside and it doesn't take much dirt to cause issues. Also because there are 2 chokes to (2 main jets, 2 idle jets) they are a little more fiddly to set up. Finally the automatic choke can over rev when cold or open too quickly and cause the car to stall in the cold.

Having said all that though, they are great when you get them set up right. And the reason they were fitted in the first place was to give the 4x4 a bit more power along with the cam of course.

Good luck with your quests tomorrow!

Try a better penetrating fluid, diesel works well, then get a bar on the crank bolt and see if you can gently rock it free, or as John says put it in a high gear, or whip the head off and see whats what.

Its probably a two pack solid, even if it isn't it is the best stuff to use anyway, apart from all the safety issues of course.

when i was in college a friend of mine had a field car which we had great fun with on his dads farm.

i still think the best way to unlock an engine is to use modded turf gripping wheels (home made "just rims with lots of cut 2" steel rebar as spikes" wheels)
tow the car up to 40mph behind a land rover on a field using a steel rope, sitting in 5th gear with the clutch held down then just letting go of the clutch and watching (no bonnet) the engine almost do a back flip in the engine bay snapping 2 mounts and bending the other.

got it unseized though.. didnt have much compression after but it ran.

had water sat in the cylinders for a few months because we had the injectors out over winter... oh and because of the stupid tractor exhaust we put in it. (it was a diesel.. that ran on its own engine oil in the end)

the car was a peugeot 206. man, we did some horrible things to that car. it just kept taking everything we threw at it... even submersion! (complete submersion!)

you ever seen "davesfarm" on youtube? i think he got his ideas from us.

anyway.. slightly OT.

yeah if the engine is "that" locked up it would be wise to do a strip down on it.. so many things could be causing the lock up.. forcing it over may damage it more.

i would have thought that everything bottom end of the engine can be swapped over from the 899 cinq engine or the 903 panda engine... as they are the same engine with different cylinder heads.
hope its something simple though.

Afternoon all!

Does seem like its 2pack.

The engine is now out! I have V-Blogged the process, sorry about the 16min vid but its not something you can cut down in to 5 mins.

not a horrific job, just take plenty of photos, vids and notes!

I have just noted the vid it out of sync with audio, im re-uploading now

Watching with interest - and learning! Love the eletrolysis results..

Aside from the problems you highlighted the green one looks really good. I did have a spare bulkhead soundproofing, will check.

In the meantime so inspiration for us both:

yeah i must say that was good work there!
man i'd love to have that locked up engine on my work bench. i'd soon find out what was wrong with it. first stops, rocker cover and sump off.

shame about the newly found rust hole but at least its only small.

good show mate, the videos are.. Better than mine!

Quick update,

My better half has the patience of a saint....

Her job today was to take all the parts I gave her and stick them in a bag, labeld so I can find bits easy when I put it back together.

Second engine pulled, the carb is actually very different on this one.... more pictures to follow when I can stand again.

Took a little under two hours to pull the second one... practice makes perfect!
