Technical 3rd gear out of alignment?

This is so weird, but a couple of times overtaking and changing down to 3rd I've got 1st and since then, being a bit wary of it happening again, I quite a few times can't find 3rd at all, I have to hold the clutch down for a while "feeling" for 3rd.

It doesn't seem to be exactly above 4th anymore but ever so slightly out of alignment.

Can this even happen? Please tell me it's a minor thing and not that my whole gearbox is faulty

It might be a simple thing that needs the gearbox removing.
But it might be cable adjustment / replacement.
Might be a broken or faulty detent spring.
I'd be underneath it on ramps to see what's happening while someone uses the gearbox standing stationary.
