I'm under pressure to get me mk1 back on the road but want to be sure it's gonna last. Please lads give us some advice, to inspect the bottom end or not.
Here is a little background
I was given this mk1 around 3 years ago as it had blown HG owner didn't want it. I got the head skimmed, new HG kit with bolts etc and its been running with no issues except lately the coolant was dropping ( didn't think HG at the time as I found a small leak where the top rad hose meets the rad which sorted )
Anyway after a 200 mile trip car started chugging just as I got back home. It smelt of petrol from coolant tank and was bubbling also so its take 2 for the HG. While the head was off I was inspecting bits and pieces and found the left water channel on the intake was completely clogged up with this thick black sludge, HG blew between 1 and 2 so maybe this was the cause and not my previous HG repair ?
Head has been skimmed and is waiting for me to pick it up tomorrow, HG kit in the post should be tomorrow or Tuesday. My question is do I now also inspect the bottom end ? I aint got the tools to lift the bottom out but the thought of just pulling the pistons as is has crossed my mind. If a jobs worth doing its worth doing right I suppose, hopefully the most is gonna cost me is a piston ring compressor to put the pistons back in and some instant gasket for the sump.
Or I stick the head back on and get compression test done to see how the engine is as a whole.
Here are some pics first of the passage that was blocked and the before and after of me cleaning the block with 400 grit sandpaper, I will have to check the block for straightness with ruler and feeler gauge tomorrow is 0.05mm or less good enough ?
