Hello, I need some advice please, I’ve just fitted the missing engine sump protection plate, but have since been told it needs to be left off to cool the engine? Is this correct?

A friend had one that was on it when his motorhome was new in 2015. It has never caused any overheating problems despite several trips to Spain in the Summer months.

I have had the factory fitted engine protection plate fitted to my X2/50 and X2/90 Ducatos since 2009. Just drilled a few small rainwater drain holes in them. Hundreds of thousands of miles throughout the UK. No overheating so far.
Problem with the sump pan is is doesn't leak oil so nothing to protect it from rust. So I smear a bit of oil over it.
