Surely that is the point. The current Panda is more function than form and is not 'styled' for styles sake.

Yes, it is functional but it also has character, much like the original Panda. I just hope they aren't making the same mistake they made when they followed the Cinq with the too similar Sei.

I almost commented on the 'character' element in the previous post. I think that it's accidental - we are Panda fans so see the car as having a character. Another less-biased observer would see it as a boxy supermini with no particular outstanding feature.

Today i went to the fiat agents to look at the new twinair 500? well i will give the 500 a miss its cramped and very small and awkward to get in and out for the rear passengers and the fuel ecconomy isnt that much different that my present panda dynamic and the panda feels more refined and has more space.

I dont think you have to go much further than the new Ypsilon to find the dimensions of the new Panda. Also the engine choices and eventual options.
It looks like it has potential and in the flesh it will look like a coherent design. (For a start reasonable size wheels will be fitted.) If there is a next-gen Panda Cross it will be very chunky! They really do need to do something about that chrome strip across the front though, it isnt a panda feature and is probably one of the bits most disliked on the Punto Evo facelift.

This means they then have the 'luxury' and 'utility' style small cars with 5 doors covered with the fashion victims in the 500 and the boyracers in a Grande Punto. Better than the current strategy I think where the Y, 500 and GP tend to clash. Although the new Y seems a bit lightweight and cost driven compared to the previous one, and quite a bit like a Mazda 2.

I wonder how much will be recognisable underneath compared to the current car?

I can get used to the design, it looks no worse than other city cars. However I am concerned about Italy building it.

I am hoping not to be in the market for a long time, as I am happy with my current Panda but new Picanto is a serious threat for the Panda, and if the Italian factories can't build them properly it will kill it.

Snapping seats, falling out switches and brake lights which only work when the airbags deploy won't be tolerated anymore.

It was a joke aimed at Italian electrics. The Punto suffered from such strange things due to poor earthing.

I hope that people who buy kia cars think about the price of parts and availability in the future .most fiat parts will fit different models and are interchangable, and the build quality of kia in the past has been terrible. at one point i thought of buying a kia but i thought about all the hastle i had with them when i worked in the trade...very expensive parts and not a lot of dealers selling the parts?

I imagine that Kia's share a lot of parts with Hyundai's

Yes, but sharing parts with VW (an already established brand) is different to sharing parts with Hyundai.
Yep. Skoda (and Seat) made cheapo cars, then they were bought by VAG and given VAG parts and designs.
Kia/Hyundai are pulling themselves up by their bootstraps which is more impressive.

Tbh anyone can make a decent car, it's just whether people will be willing to pay the money when it's a relatively unknown brand or a brand which has a bit less prestige.

I'm not so sure about that. Look at some of the home-grown Chinese stuff. Large 4x4s with zero NCAP stars and suchlike. I mean they went and bought Rover which didn't exactly have the best model line up in the world.
It does take time and money to develop a top notch car and it's a lot easier if an established manufacturer gives you their stuff.

Be interesting to see how Lada turns out with Renault's help.

Yeah but I somehow doubt that the chinese are the most discerning of buyers and perhaps safety isn't quite the consideration it is here.

Has anyone mentioned the very square looking steering wheel yet? the press will have a field day with that and likening it to the Allegro.

The chinese bought Rover and ended up with the 75 platform which shared a huge amount with the E39 5 series BMW which is more than competitive in the midrange sector even now.

Renault own Dacia (or part of) and that really is the up and coming brand in Europe. Real down to earth cars that do the basics well. The kind of thing the pretentious british press will give a serious beating but everyone else will buy. Having driven across europe about 6 weeks ago I saw more Dacia Duster (SUV model) than any other newish car. About 12 vs 1 Mini Countryman. They even entered a Duster Special in this years Pikes Peak. Either Seat or Skoda should have taken this position in the market instead of competing with each other and VW.
Not sure about Renault and Lada though.
