Hi everyone,

I purchased a 2011 Ducato 100 Multijet 250 AAMFB at 117,000km.
Just did a roundtrip from Berlin - Portugal at around 7000km of driving with no problems at all, drove great. Parked it at home on return and a few days later started it up and there was a new unusual sound coming from the engine bay.

Its a clattering sound that is there at cold start and still there after 30 mins of driving/warm. It is there at idle as well as in motion - but does seem to go away when pressing on the accelerator - somewhat reliably, but not always the same amount/completely. But the accelerator does seem to have a noticeable effect (other than smothering the noise). I'm trying to get an appointment to have it checked but the mechanics are on holidays and I have some driving to do - so hoping someone recognises this and can tell me what kind of risk I'm taking by driving it another 10 hours or so before getting it checked.

Here is a video - sound (to my untrained ear) seems to be coming from the left side of the engine block.

Thanks!!

Hi,
It could be timing chain or chain guide/s or chain tensioner.
If the noise is louder at bottom of engine it could be oil pump breaking up internally.
I have seen both of the above on the same engine type.

Do not drive it until it has been properly diagnosed.

Fingers crossed it will be something else that's easier than fitting new timing chain kit.

Good news is parts are very reasonably priced for this engine (-:

Best wishes

Jack

Thank you both - managed to get a mechanic to diagnose (but he can't do the work) - he said timing chain :/
Now I have to find a mechanic who can do the work and cross my fingers while I drive there!
Thats good news about the parts though, thanks Jack!

Hopefully this video helps someone else who starts to hear that engine a-rattlin' down the line.

All the best

Thanks for update .

Please don't even start it.
See photo of chain that was not rattling prior to breaking....
In uk chain kit - chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, oil seal currently around £130
New timing cover-yes you will need one! £20
Timing lock tool £25 - on 6 speed gear box it's more sensible to use to that attaches to crank sprocket.

I would happily let you pay me to do it 😀 but I'm in England 🙄

Do not believe the silly long manufacturer oil change interval......far better to change oil every 10,000 miles (16,000km) or maximum of 2 years if distance not covered.

Thanks Jack! I'd happily drive to the UK and pay you to do it, but maybe not the best idea.

Managed to get it to a mechanic who can do the work. Hasn't given me a final figure yet but 1000€ was thrown around as an approximate including materials and labour. Seems high, but honestly in Berlin it usually is as soon as they hear you not speaking native German... the previous mechanic who diagnosed it said likely 1500€. Well, lets see. Thanks again for your help!

Hi again everyone, just wanted to follow up on this for the sake of anyone coming through later...
Timing chain was 800€ including labour cost & was seriously stretched and a timely fix.
New problems have shown up now - they will get a new thread :)

New problem: blowing smoke!
