2008 Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Check Engine Light on and not driving very well at all!!!

Hi guys im new to the forums. But i already have a big problem with my missus car the fiat 500 multijet now whilst we were out in the car last night it suddenly threw the check engine light on and reduced all the power. Now i had changed the pads and discs on the car the day before and im wondering if you have to tell the car basically that ive changed the brakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated?????

Heavy rain before hand by chance when the car was sitting parked

no rain or anything just went out for a drive and it suddenly went into limp mode and wont let you drive it at any speed or pull you up hills or anything its just really lacking power and wont rev whatsoever it also cuts out when you first try and start it now and after starting and cuting out 5-6 times it will stay idling my mind is boggled
