Hello,
I have an 02 Abarth Stilo which I have owned for 3-4 years. I have only had two minor problems, one sorted out under warrenty and the other sorted it self out? The gear box is a bit love it or hate it, but when you get used to it it can be fun as can the flippy paddles. There were lots of concerns over road tax and petrol prices (it does use a lot of petrol!) but petrol prices have now dropped and Road tax wont be going from £230ish to £400+ until 2011 as opppsed to 2009 (Thank you recession).
They are overly technical cars and can be a B*****D and expensive if they go wrong, (the gear box can be a weak spot) and Fiat dealerships can be hit or miss, but there are quite a few specialist garages around. (I have taken a warrenty out on it to try and avoid any surprises)
For a 2.4 I think they are underpowered. The JTD versions do seem very good and popular, but I cant comment as never driven one. If you do buy it I would make sure its got a full service history and the cambelt and tensioners have been done as this is very expensiven. Reading this forum another persons 'Abarth' has just done 100k miles and mines up to 64k.
Cheers
Natty

the way to look at an abarth is, if you want a car that looks different, (if a little like an a3), and look at it as a cheap well equipped "sporty" car with some heritage in the badge then its a bargain,

its quicker than normal run of the mill cars, hold out for one with leather interior which makes the car feel as special as the badge says it should be,

just try and get a non faulty one, as faults can be expensive,

oh and theres that many sensors its normal to get the odd warning beep for no reason.

the sound of the engine alone is worth the money in my view :yum:

i personally love semi auto boxes in general so have no issue with the abarths, but the negative reviews are more based on its supposed to be a hot hatch, and the gear change just aint quick enough for that, but youl only want extreemly quick shifts less than 5% of the time you drive it (unless your gona race it non stop) so the gearbox is a blessing the rest of the time, just leave it in auto or drive clutchless

The abarth could have been a winner if fiat had only used the V6 engine from the alfa..now thats summat worth contemplating even if it will never happen..:worship:

mmmm 147 GTA my dream car!

@ GaryPan, I think so long as you check her out and she has been loved over her life she will be no less relaible than most other cars! Even more so with the 2.4 make sure you check her out fully! (y)

Could it be the variator on the blink rather than the bottom end?

Could it be the variator on the blink rather than the bottom end?

Variator would only show on start up though my little yellow friend..and after that it should run sweetly..abarth engines do seem to have problems with long levity and it would seem they can self destruct anytime after the 50,000 mile mark ..lack of service info can affect that more if you dont have relevant info about whether the car was serviced regularly by previous owners..that is one to consider when purchasing one..

Besides the already mentioned potential engine bottom end self destruction followed by huge quotes for repair, and th plethora of obscure warnings thrown up by the car, the annual Road Tax fund bill is horrendous...
