Technical 2001 punto 1.2 8v elx

Could anyone tell me if any punto gearbox will fit or does it have to be model specific? I have been told by the garage it needs replacing...

Don't know about a HGT gearbox, but any 1.2 5 speed or 6 speed gearbox will slot straight in. Fairly sure this is ditto for the mk2b boxes as well but will need confirmation from someone else.

I've just procured myself a new (well, used) 5 speed box from a scrapyard for £100 from a 03 reg 1.2 8v with only 40k miles on the clock so it is fairly easy to get a decent box for a reasonable price. If you have the money a reconditioned box can be worth it either.

To add to Matt's post,

Don't bother with a 6 speed gearbox you will have no benefits whatsoever unless you just like the thought of having a 6th gear then go for it

Always go for a low mileage gearbox so there's less wear & tear!

the mk2b is the same 1.2 8v engine thats in the mk2

So the gearboxs from the 1999 to 2006 (mk2 - mk2b) will all fit

my views are to recon - but if a cheap low milage box is found and self fitting i'd give it a whirl
