Hello everyone,

My panda broke down due to a failure of the local garage. They are willing to replace the entire engine, free of charge. But I need to find one. I read quite some interesting stuff om engine conversions to get some more oomph out of my beloved panda, can anyone provide me with the types of engines that have as much 1:1 compatibility with the current 2001 1.1 MPI block? I've searched and read quite some topics on the subject, but I need to be sure for my particular model. Thanks in advance, Niels.

Re: 2001 Panda engine compatibility

I take you are from the continent?

If you have a classice mk2, or even mk1, then go for the 1242 8v from a punto perhaps. The garage might only replace the engine if it is exactly the same and not tuned in anyway. hope your search goes well.

What actually happened to the original engine that it broke though? might be easier to ask them to fix it for you free of charge?

Re: 2001 Panda engine compatibility

This tread does apply to the classic Panda. Nobody cares about 'new' ones  It's a Dutch car. And yes, I also though about the garage not wanting to put anything other in than standard, but I might as well give it a shot. I've been thinking about buying a 'project Panda' for a long time, now this happens...
So how about that 8v; many modifications needed? I've found a 1,2 16v in the ads.
Thanks in advance!

/update: the 1,2 ad-guy replied, it is actually also an MPI block, like my Panda. Motorcode:188A5

Re: 2001 Panda engine compatibility

1242 8V is much easier to fit (almost nothing to change) than 1242 16V (needs some changer in Panda)....

I returned to the garage, where they had a surprise for me. They re-ground the head, put in a brand new gasket and distribution belt. He's running great again! Well, not with the additional HP's unfortunately. But I'm very happy to have it back. Before this 'episode' I bought a new door (was in bad shape) and some tight 13' rims, so I can go on fitting those.
Have a new problem with those rims, they are quite wide, and protruding the body. I don't feel like cutting or anything, but is there a way to limit the suspension travel in the end?
Ciao, Nelis.

In answer to your question about the whhels, do you know the offset? if the stick out i guess it will be mid 20's

The best way to solve this is to have them ground down.
The face that sits on the hub, on the insode of the wheel will need to be shortened. hard to explain) Basiclly you need a huge lathe to grind it off. Alternativley a wide arch kit could be sourced

I hope you understand me, Craig
