I have had my X reg 1.2 8v Punto for 18 months now. It's only done 46k miles and I bought it at 34k.

I've always had small niggles with it such as intermittent power steering and window seals being loose but I had some enquiries about some others that are getting more worrying as time goes on. Ideally I'm looking for a new car but I need to save up first so wondered if you guys could help rectify my existing problems! I don't really think it's worth going to a garage yet.

1) My passenger footwell has a wet patch right in the middle in a sort of square shape. I've checked the guttering which is all clear, I've felt around the rest of the footwell and the wet patch is only in the centre, my water levels are staying high. I noticed it in December when my windows kept freezing up on the inside and then my girlfriend took her shoes off on a long journey and noticed the floor was soaked. I've constantly had the hot blowers on it trying to dry it out but it has had no success. I assumed it could have been from when we had floods but I would have thought this would have dried up by now. Is my only option to rip the carpet up and see if there's a hole in my floor?!

2) I've had this problem for over a year and it doesn't seem to get any better. Whenever I have more than 2 people in the car there is a terrible clanging noise when pulling off or even if I'm travelling quite slow. Somebody suggested it could be my rear shock absorbers seized up and that I should try WD40 to loosen them up. Has anybody else experienced this and solved it with such a simple technique...?

3) Possibly my weirdest problem and one that is starting to happen more consistently is I'm experiencing some sort of 'turbo lag' in 2nd gear. Strange I know, seeing as I have a 1.2 8v... What happens is normally when I leave work at 5:30pm (although also happens on some mornings), I pull away in first gear, and then my change to second seems to be very jolty as in it almost throws me forward in my seat as it feels someone has slammed the brakes on. Then as I accelerate in second gear it's like I have no power at all for 2 or 3 seconds and then it's like the engine finally wakes up and starts accelerating. This isnt a huge issue as it's literally a couple of seconds every day and once it's running it's fine but I'm just wondering if it has the potential to turn into anything more serious?

Any help for any of the problems would be much appreciated, even if you can only answer 1 or 2! I'm hoping to save for a new car as soon as possible but it'll probably be July at the earliest before I can afford anything half decent and plus it would tie in with my insurance renewal/MOT/Service if I swapped in July.

Thanks guys~

A - Rip the carpet up and the under padding stuff, have a look at what exactly is going on

Observe if any water trails lead you anywhere

B - Rear back box, alot of exhaust fitters dont fit the backbox correctly and it dongs on the rear axle, stick some dead bodies in the car and before you know it - its like driving with a cow bell everytime the rear beam adjusts to bumps

C - Lacking power can be anything, however i know exactly what you mean
I put this down to age on my car, as it wasn't exactly doing very well

Do a compression test (£10 off ye olde bay!), do a dry with WOT (disconnect the low tension plugs to coils) and note all the results down

Then do the same again except do a wet test - which means putting 5ml of oil in the cylinders, waiting 30seconds before cranking. I used standard engine oil out my top up bottle. A Straw dipped, finger over end in it - it'll hold enough oil to allow you to test
