Technical 2000 Punto 1.2 8v irratic idle

First of all im a newbie.....so Hello to all people of wisdom here

right, ive got a customers car in for an irratic idle problem its a Wreg 1.2 8v. he described the fault as intermittent, car will start up no problem, idle would sometimes drop very low and try to cut out, blip the throttle and it seems fine, untill he goes to stop at a junction and it revs through the roof????
have checked for jammed throttle cable, have replaced throttle body (as thought maybe a faulty idle control valve) fault still remains, have checked for air leaks, none whatso ever.

when the engine is revving high by itself with the air filter removed and covering half of the idle control intake hole, the engine seems to sort itself out and once finger removed all seems ok??

just wondering if anyone could shed some light, or anyone had any similar problems, also there are no fault codes present.

i had this problem with my hgt, it turned out to be one (of way to many!) of the lambda sensors. might be worth giving that a go?
