WOW....let me get this straight guys....looking at the engine...are you classing cylinder one as the cylinder nearest the drivers side?? If that is the case, the coil pack nearest the bulkhead fires cylinder 1 and 3 on my car, the other pack, nearest the exhaust manifold fires the other 2!!

Will someone in the know confirm...which coil pack should be firing which cylinder??? perhaps this is why my car is running like a bag of ****e???

HELP????

Cheers

Andy

assuming your LT connections (little plugs) are the right way around - i.e. red/blue and green/blue wires to pack nearest the front.

pete, is there anything else i'm going to need when taking the head off - other than a new gasket set and timing belt? anything i need to lookout for?

Sorry to jump in here but you might as well replace the alternator belt and also the water pump and oil & filter since all the work that will be getting done.

Liam

This is going to end up one of those 50p fix stories, I can feel it in me bones.

how much does a water pump cost tho.. yeah i shoulda bought a new alternator belt.. why didnt i think of that!

Oil and filter will be done as well, yeah.

Current status: Stripped down and just needs the head bolts taking off and then the head can come off and be skimmed tomrrow. I'l take it off later, once its not raining anymore!

Hi,

Well the Wife's Chinq is back on the road. Jason the friendly grease monkey towed it to his garage and had the car for days, he said "I will first do a diagnosis before I do anything", well his equipment did'nt work on Fiats so he booked it in at Camco which is a major diagnosis place in Warrington.

Camco found no faults with the ecu, sensors etc but what they did find was that the cam-belt had jumped a few notches so Jason the grease monkey took it back to his garage to fix.

He put a new belt on, a new belt tensioner, set the timing and hey-presto it started.

The car was lacking power before, the reason, the handbrake had seized on which made the rear alloys hot to touch. I spent a day sorting this out!

Camco diagnosis : £70
Belt & tensioner : £22
Labour : £40

So for me everything is sorted!
No beer for a couple of days though I'm a bit strapped for cash now!

Now then - I feel a greasy weekend coming on. How do I go about checking timing. I did it on a Ford 2.0l pinot engine a couple o years ago, but that was out of the enigne bay and rwd.

Anyone? Or is a haynes job? I didnt think to check this for my faults. Would also be an exzcuse to do oil changes/fuel filter changes/fuel pump recon (maybe)

Hi Sam,

Get your hands on a Haynes manual if you can because all the timing marks are indicated very well. About £10 to £15 from Halfords. Or try your library.

Also it explains how to get pot 1 at TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) on the compression stroke, there are timing marks on the cam-pulley and the crank-pulley which both have to line up.

It's wise to put a new cam-belt tensioner in as well, about £10.

I opted for a mechanic to do mine (a bit worried about making a cock-up).

Cheers beermonster.
ps. It runs like a dream now.
