Technical 2.0L 20V Timing

Hi People,

I've posted some threads in the past about me Marea. I originally brought a non running Marea. I was told the cam sensor was faulty. But when I went further into the investigation found that the idler had collapsed. DOH! But the sensor was also faulty!

Now. After months of trying to find the cowpat from the rocking horse (Sensor and Pulley (this was also damaged) ) I went to a salvage yard to look for a repairable salvage car but came across a Marea! Also a 2.0 20V exactly like mine! What luck.

I've managed to get everything sorted now the crank pulley is lined up with the cambelt cover but I need to know how to time up the top as we are not sure that it is in the correct position due to the idler collapsing etc etc.

So finally the bit I need you to read is

How do you align the cam shafts? Also I know that I will need the tools but I need to know what position the cams should be in.

TDC on cyl No.1 I would hope. haynes will tell you, but once timing has been lost it may be a case of taking head off in order to determine which orientation it is in.

Timing marks should be etched onto pulley and block, but as I found, you can easily put it one turn further round than its mean't to be (in punto you get away with this, you won't). Samething with crankshaft, and whatever else is on there (got a balancer?? they are real fun to set up).

IIRC no timing marks on the cams, either.

Hi,

There is a timing mark on the right hand pulley which lines up and the crank has one but the left hand one doesn't. We took a risk and spun it by hand first. Seems to be spinning without any problems.

Now i've gone to start it but it doesn't want to start at all just keeps on trying but doesn't. It has been standing for the last 3 months so the battery was dead.

I stuck a set of jump leads on from the faithfull veccy and it doesn't want to start. So I've whipped the battery out and put it on charge.

Hopefully will have another go at it on Sunday.

Before you do any timing on te car and before you start it.

make sure the valves are opening wen there ment to. if you try and run the engine you WILL crush the valves into the pistons , not cheep to repair, means new engine from scarp yard,

Got the timing tools and had a go. All fitted into position and then put cambelt on flicked the switch and bob was my uncle!

The Marea's all working. Yipee. Got all serviceable parts yesterday and I will service it on Monday maybe tuesday!
