General 2.0 jtd towing

How well should a Scudo 2.0 JTD tow a caravan (of "average weight"). Should I be able to go 60mph up hill and down dale or will it struggle?

'Book' towing weight is 750kg.

This is equivalent to 8 to 10 people (2 or 3 hundred if they are ethiopian ) either way if you can imagine your van filled with 'mates' front and back and how it would 'pull' then this is what you're looking at for a full 750kg towing weight.

Hopefully your caravan isn't that heavy???

The caravan is about 850. Where are you getting the "book" towing weight, that seems low and there are no stability problems at all, just doesn't seem to go very fast, and caravan matching sites suggest it should be a very good tower. I am wondering if there is something wrong with it.

Bad man I know, but I tow the SJ with no problems what so ever.

There are TWO towing weights applicable to any vehicle.

One related to 'braked' loads (i.e. a trailer with integral brakes)
One related to an 'unbraked' trailer (presumably your caravan?)

Either way if Russy196 is towing an unbraked trailer of 2000kg then I GUESS he's breaking the law!!! (not aware of that 'jeep' make/model and/or 'book' towing capacities).

Edit - a quick Google reveals that Suzuki model to have a towing weight (unbraked) of 500kg MAX (750kg braked !!!!) ....... definitely a lawbreaker!

Caravans are braked these days (and for the last 30 years at least). I imagine the trailer in the pic is too. But I think he tows with the Scudo not the Suzuki.

Thanks Russy196 for your experience, I assume it is not dreadfully slow? I have to put it in 3rd for some steep bits of motorways.

Mine is an 02 model, not the newer one (so same as Russy's).

well ok, I'm proud to acknowledge that I know nothing at all about caravans so the fact that they are 'braked' is news to me .

Hi there, I've just completed a week's work where I've had to tow a 1300kgs wood chipper. My 1.9D non turbo coped realy well on "A" roads. No snaking or anything untoward at speed of up to 50 mph. Hope this helps.

The max allowed for the 1.9d (non-turbo) is 1100kg.

I don't suppose the cops would be able to recognise the difference between an 1100kg load and one slightly higher however if you had an accident they would surely weigh it!

I've towed a digger bucket on a trailer behind a Scudo (about 2 tonnes, yes i know ) and i could get it above 60mph,
ever thought about getting it remapped? Better fuel economy and seriously better towing power,
IMO i think more power is a real safety gain in case you need to get out of a situation.

Power isn't an issue when towing - let's face it, if a bloke can tow a jumbo jet using his teeth a diesel van can tow something well in excess of a simple 'digger'.

The danger is the BRAKING. Get two tons of towing up to speed and slam on the anchors - see how soon you (don't) stop.....

Regardless of the brakes on the towing platform the inertia present in a vehicle towing any significant weight will mean you will run into someone if there is an emergency braking situation AND, once the weight towed exceeds the weight of the vehicle pulling it, you're asking for a 'jack-knife' situation - ask any artic lorry driver!

I did not ask about braking, nor about the new version of the van. I want to know if my old JTD2.0 should have sufficient power to happily tow a 900kg caravan, based on other peoples' experiences.

If you want to have a go at people for towing too much feel free to start a new thread.

My first answer to your post pointed you in the right direction and you have subsequently been told that others have towed heavier weights with no problem so I guess you already have your answer.

The additional information was only offered to prevent other FF users from unintentionally breaking the law. If this 'stepped on the toes of your thread' then I apologise but it wasn't me that skewed the thread topic.

Just FYI, as far as I know the max braked trailer weight for the Mk1b (or Mk2) 2.0Jtd SWB Scudo is 1650Kgs, unlike the latest one at 2000Kgs. You can find the info on the drivers door sticker.

My one's a little different as it came factory spec'ed (bought it new) with an extra load pack. I went a bit mad with the order book, ticked all the boxes, even got the air con

Having a brain modification works for me , well not me the van. It's made towing a dream, much better and safer than it was as standard (though that was good). we regularly pull the trailer and my trials SJ (950Kgs+ trailer at 610Kgs) all over the country for events, sometimes down through France. The extra torque has made a huge difference. I have uprated the brakes, but that's made little difference to towing as I rarely go over 60mph and I find while towing I always leave much more room around me on the road.

Insurance on a 160+BHP Scudo is a different matter

Recent discovery of a tiny pipe under the bonnet which was disconnected this has helped considerably. It now has a turbo and is like an F1 car. I just thought vans were slow, and have had this fault for 3 years since I bought the van. I guess MPG will be better now too. I feel a bit silly
