Hi all
Can any one tell me are the timing mark positions the same on the 2.5 and the 2.8
I purchased a 98 swift fiat ducato motorhome ,took a gamble as it was spotless and dry but a non runner
The plast engine top cover was removed and the cam belt exposed
With a new battery and some fresh fuel ,i had it firing infrequently but wouldnt fire up and run
Nothing to do with the usual electrics, immobiliser,or the switch next to the battery
Im timing it on the crank with the raised spot on the gear in line with the slot on the plastic case
The pump gear is pinned where it should be ,pin through gear into recessed aperture in block
Valve gear notch in line with mark on valve cover
But,when i turn the crank very slowly ,i feel valve contact
So im a bit lost with it ,the head looks super clean and so does the pump
Im wondering is there an issue with the valves, but obviously there was something going on just going by the way i received it
The van didnt come with any information ,it was a blind purchase from an estate sale and only 40,000 miles
Im just rebuilding my garage at the mo or i would pull the head off ,just dont want to do it on the drive
Any ideas anyone

So you never heard it running, but cambelt cover was off, does it look like a new belt, those engines bend conrods as well as valves when belt breaks.
Not anymore , but I have rebuilt them in the past.
Another thing you can do is remove the cam cover and see if any of the valves have massive clearance, as it stick down their guides.
If you give me the engine Series number from the chassis plate, I can let you have the cambelt timing details, assuming that is the engine in it.:)

Hi bugsymike
Thanks for the response, heres a pic of the chassis plate showing 8140.63
Cam guides all look good,i feel like i will need to remove the head but as this is the first ducato engine ive had i welcome any knowledge you have with these

Sorry, for late response, I work on the "early to bed, early to rise" principle.:)
Most of my work on those engines was in rear wheel drive format Iveco Dailys plus some Ducato and Citroen Relays. Also I put a 1997 Ducato Maxi 122hp engine in my last boat.
Basically provided regular cam belt change, engine flush with oil and filter and working thermostat, I found them an excellent engine, not as economical as the later 2.3s, but lots of low end grunt. I had a 3.5 tonne twin wheel Daily that would tow a 3.5 tonne trailer happily averaging 24mpg.What I did find was that due to close piston to head tolerance, engines that had cam belt failure usually bent a con rod on that cylinder, so with head off, apart from the valves buried in piston you found the corresponding piston roughly 2mm higher in bore compared with the damaged one.;)
Below is photo of timing details. If you take head off etc. I have torque settings and other technical details, but no fitting instructions as trade should know the basics.:)
