Hello Everyone,
This is my first time posting but I have been reading many post for the last 2 months. I have a question on installing seat belts in a 500L for the front and the rear. I have found a seat belt for the front that is sold my a few fiat parts suppliers but I have not found anything for the rear. Has any one installed seat belts in the rear of this car, and if so where did you purchase these parts. I was also wondering if any purchased just a generic three point seat belt that you can find at most auto parts suppliers and would work in this car.

Thank you in advanced,
Vito

be careful with a three point in the back, most seatbelts require the seatbelt 'reel' if that's the right word, facing up, so the belt comes out of the top of it, if this is possible in the 500 life is a little easier. and you'll obviously need to put three strong bolts in per side forgotten the size of bolt usually used but it's pretty big.

you can buy seatbelts where you adjust the mechanism so you can have it mounted at any angle. MGBs use these and being common as muck, parts are easy to get hold of, but not always cheap in this case, other cars use these belts too but the vertical type is the most common.

Is a 2 point lapbelt not an option? if it's only for occasional use?

Sorry my first email was a little mis leading. I would like to put a three point seat belt in the front and a lap belt in the back. My goal is to have both the front and rear belts as bolt on item if possible. My Father does not want to modify the car in any way, he wants to keep it original.

I could be wrong, but I would have thought all "L" models would have had front seat belts fitted??

They are very simple - they bolt to the top of the rear door posts, then a second bracket is bolted to the floor just to the rear of the front seats, and then two simple catch mechanisms on stalks between the two front seats.

Are the mounting holes not present in your car?

My father purchased this car in late Febuary and is having it shipped from Italy to Canada. It should be here by the end of April, so I have not had the chance to see the car other then some very vague pictures sent from the seller. He is not sure that they are there and my manual does not show the seat belts installed. So I will wait to see if they are installed.
Thank you for your help:).

Can someone post a picture of their front seat floor-mount for seat belts? I don't see where these would mount on my '70 500L. Do I need to pull out the carpet to see the mounts or are there even weld nuts down there?

Safety belts did not become mandatory in Italy until 15 June 1976, so the 500 was never fitted with seatbelts although in the later years they made mounting points. Even it's successor, the 126, first started production without safety belts, but I digress from the OPs question.

Hi Marcus

Here are some pictures for the front 3 point seat belt mountings, the upper mounting os on the 'B' post at shoulder height. This was from the restoration phase on my 1972 500L RHD car. The rear seat belts are yet to be installed and these are the mounting brackets I have for that. Supplier details are in the picture narratives.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Whilst we're on the subject, is it legal for little ones to travel on the back seats? Or should I put her in the front with a belt and stick the missus in the back?

Children over the age of three are OK in the back seat if seatbelts weren't fitted from new and they obviously don't need booster seats. But you can't put them in if they are under three.
As far as I know, the rules for front sests are as normal where they must use a booster seat up to the age of 12 or when they reach the height of 135cm.

Can anyone help with rear inertia seat belts for my 1971 500L
The main UK specialist parts supplier sell rear inertia seat belts for a 500 / 126

Does anyone have any idea of fitting points / diagrams / sketches / visions in their heads???

The only noticable difference from the front ones sold - is that the catch / stalk is a web type rather than cable

Rear inertia belts sorted!!
All I have to do is remove the rear vent above the engine lid......screws look a bit old......
Should have front and rear belts installed for £75.
:)

How easy was it to fit the rear belts? Would like to do the same.
I am also just about to buy some front inertia belts. Do they bolt onto the existing mounting points or is any modification needed?

Rear belts were easy as car was stripped. Reels mount on rear shelf under window, second mount in bulkhead near wheel arch, web type buckles in centre of rear bulkhead - do not buy stalk type buckles
