Technical 1.9 Multijet engine oil...

Hey guys,

Ok this may have been covered but didnt really find anything useful on the search so thought Id get some feedback and opinions for anyone else doing a search!

What engine oil do you guys use on your 1.9 Multijets ??

When I looked through my manual it says that I should use Selenia 20k or something but doesnt actaully tell me what the oil rating is which doesnt really help and as I wont be buying oil directly from Fiat its even less use... From further research however I found that Castrol do an Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 which was recommend to my car from the Castrol site which seems like a good point to call for me... Any opinions on this oil and anyone using this?

BTW I dont have a GP Sporting 1.9 I have a Punto HGT Multijet which is 100HP/192Lb/ft but stills I believe its the same engine as the GP Sporting 1.9 and I feel I get more sence out of you GP owners than in the Punto section

well I'm up to 14,500 miles, and haven't needed to top it up yet, (its about half way between min and max, so should be fine until the 18k service...) my local fiat garage stocks the recommended selina stuff, but I have come accross the castrol stuff you're talking about, and I believe its a similar gradde.... if its out of warranty go for it... as mines in warrenty I'd stick to the recommended selina stuff (try e-bay... has selina oils cheap on there...)

Selenia 20k is for the petrol engines.

They used to do Selenia Turbo diesel 10w-40, but have now dropped it in favour of Selenia WR (wide-range) 5w-40 throughout the diesel range.

Would you say the Castrol Edge is a better grade of oil than the Selenia WR?

From my petrol experiance ive always used Shell Helix Ultra/Plus which are either 5W-40 or 10W-40

I wonder if they do a diesel version of the Shell Helix Plus or Ultra

The rating of the oil shows that regardless of the brand it reaches the mimimum specs the only major differences between brands tend to be additives such as detergents.

I personaly have always used Mobil 1 (Petrol and Diesel varients) and have never had an engine wear relatated failure or a single oil leak in any car i've owned and i must have driven many hundreds of thousands of miles.

I also never stick to the manaufactures oil change intervals and always do an oil and filter change more regularly.

OMG watch THAT open up a debate... More frequent oil and filter changes.

I suggested and discussed that along with 1 or 2 others on here and there are some very strong arguments against, main one being un-necessary cost!

Not even trying to get into that debate just saying I've never had wear related problems, how much of that is down to Mobil 1 and how much is down to more frequent oil changes I have no idea. This formula works for me so I'm not changing it

from the horses mouth the oil is fully synthetic 5w 30!!, doesn't matter if its selina personally i think its crap! i Chane oil every 8k miles with castrol magnatec. its only about £25 from halfords, and don't forget its a GM engine i.e ford, vauxhall, ect
