Charlie, the lights do not stay on when the engine is not running - even with a fully charged battery.

Which lights..??

Headlights are generally reliant on the ignition switch....

If the headlights fail at the point the engine dies..
Youve essentially lost connection from the battery to the cars wiring looms.

You can check for earth lead fault with Multi meter, set to 12\24 volt DC
Neg lead on battery -, meter + to chassis or engine do not connect before helper is cranking there should be 0 to 1 volt MAX showing while cranking or running, you would be surprised at variation from model to model.
If connections cleaned & no change suspect under speck wire, have seen 3 volt drop on cars from new, cheap penny pinching cost engineering :bang:
If item is earth return there should be NO or minimum voltage from its case\ earth point to battery Neg terminal.
We always checked battery- to earth as part of a service also in the distant days distributor case to earth another high resistance spot.

Hi. I have added a new lead to Earth, and to no avail. The motor still cuts out randomly - although I have narrowed it down to certain times. 1) During winter months (usually no problems in Summer) 2) when I pull away from starting up - and take foot off throttle to change down a gear or stop 3) when I go to pull away in reverse gear from starting up (I can pull away in first, but not reverse) Anyone got an idea?
