hey all just wanderd what mpg or miles per tank people are getting?
Basically im getting about 220 miles out of a full tank. Thats driving normally with out thrashing it, its seviced regulary and tyre pressures are correct.
1996 1.8 just had new engine (115 bhp) with 20,000 on it.

try taking handbrake off..lol

or get a lighter foot :)

sorry m8 :)

i get bout 350-380 ona goood run m8, but u only run yours down to when the light comes on. i run mine into the reserve

Ive just done 90 for a half a tank so my ar*se is starting to twitch lol. I havent even gone slightly quick in it (and yes the hand brake is off) :)

something not right there mate. book it into fiat for a diagnostic mate, cost u bout £30 :)

they are your best bet, at least they'll be able to narrow things down?

any other symptoms apart from dire fuel consumption. I can easily get 340miles before my light comes on. My best for mileage including using as much reserve as i dare was 389miles, so theres definitely something horribly wrong with yours. Mine hits halfway on 190 miles if i've really filled it to the brim, so 90 just isn't right at all.

Depends on how long your journeys are too mate. I used to get 100 miles from £10 when I commuted to Uni. Now I get about 60-70 miles from doing short journeys across town

other than the mpg the car runs fine idles/accelerates normally , temp guage is justin under half (tho it does take a while to warm up)
any thing i can check before it goes to fiat? :(

Any sensible ideas ;) i can check my self?
Also i get a wiff of petrol as im driving, not through the vents only when the windows are open (thats why i aint noticed it lately, too friggin cold)lol. Back in the summer i noticed it got worse when accellerating. theres no obvious leak so it must be comming out under pressure??
I know this seems a big giveaway to the mpg but i dont even know its related (maybe a minute leak)
cheers guys...

After reading this post i filled my 1.8hlx with a total of 50.27 litres of esso unleaded @ 91.9p per litre, total of £46.20 and I got 350 miles then the light came on!

This worked out at around 32mpg but I coul have gone longer still but didn't want to risk running out of fuel!

But I still don't think 32mpg is good, could be better!!!

I think the temp gauge being slow to register may be key.
Its like you're driving with the choke out all the time as the engine manegement thinks its still cold.
Would explain the odd whiff of petrol too.

Me too. I vary my driving style depending on my mood quite a bit so sometimes I give it a right hammering and other times I'm driving like an old man.

I average about 260 to a tank.

Looking at the fuel consumption table in the running guide the 115hlx averages at 34mpg so comparing my 32mpg to this, doesn't sound too bad as I don't drive like an old lady most of the times, I enjoy putting my foot down occasionally!

And as mentioned above, my temp gauge only gets up about 4 notches at the most on a clear run! Something to think about? (New thermostat might be due?)

cheers dave im tinkin that to, gonna replace the thermostat and see how it goes....
anyone any experience of changing it (pain in the ass)??
just had to replace half of the brake pipes so carnt be as bad as that lol :)

My hlx only gets upto 3 bars on the temp gauge and then stops. My fan kicks in at about half way if its summer and i'm in traffic, i put this down to dodgy needle/gauge than thermostat as my interior fan gets plenty of warm air from the engine and my engine has never overheated.

Yeah my fan kicks in at halfway, it only gets up there when stationary and has never gone over one notch above halfway! My interior heater gets nice and warm aswell.

So you think it's a dodgy temp. gauge then??!! You know how to cure this??

The heater will get warm even with the needle at the bottom of the guage, it doesn't mean the engine is at the right temp. The bottom of the scale is about 50degC.

If the fan kicks in at halfway on the guage then then the guage works fine. Your thermostat is shot, simple as that.

Mine varies but does depend on my right foot.

If I'm cautious I can get 200 out of the first half and then get to about 350 from entire tank. If I boot it everywhere then its closer to 250 for the whole tank :)

I can tell if I'm being a good boy as mine will read 185-200 on half a tank :)
