Punto (Mk2/2b) 1.8 hgt no guts

Hi all ive just for the first time gone and got myself a 2002 punto 1.8 hgt in yellow, they state this car has 130bhp but yet my 1.3jtd punto van was so much faster.
Ive heard so much about a thing called a variator that seems to make your car sound like a diesel on star up, what I'm after is will this be the thing that is preventing my car from reaching its full power......

Does it sound like your 1.3 multijet?

The 1.8 HGT Had a common fault with the variator which controls timing and can cause all sorts of running problems

i was reading on some italian forum that bad variator supposedly doesnt damage your engine
