General 1.6 versus 1.4 engine

An impressive level of disagreement has developed since I thought I'd made my mind up! ;)

My understanding of the 6 gears is that is was introduced in the 1.2 engine for the reasons explained above. But the 1.2 engine IS seriously underpowered for a family saloon/hatchback and therefore flooring the accelerator and a strong tailwind is required to get the speed above 30mph. Thus the benefits of the extra gear ratios are utterly negated by the feeble 80bhp output. That's why Fiat replaced it with the 1.4 and that does seem to have done the job in balancing refinement and performance with economy to an acceptable level for those of us who simply want to get from A to B without having to thrash every rev. out of a 1.2 to arrive at the newsagent's before it closes, having set out at 6am. Or want to get there without having to phone Ocean Finance every time we turn the key in our 2.4 litre (per mile) Arbath.

The 1.6 engine, from my five years experience of it, is that it is a very sturdy and reliable lump, provides decent acceleration and is quiet and refined if driven sensibly through the gears. It is rather thirsty, but I find it hard to believe that the greater the cc the better the fuel economy in a petrol engine, as this goes against everything I've read about Stilos, and cars generally. You almost invariably pay for the extra 'VOOOMMM' of a 1.8, 2.0. 2.4 and upwards through the petrol pump. That's surely why so-called 'gas guzzlers' cost a fortune to tax as well as fill up these days.

I'd happily have another 1.6. If money was no object I'd love the luxurious pull and wastefulness of an Arbath. If I wasn't set in my ways I'd give a diesel a spin. And the 1.2 may well be the cheapest to run, but frankly I'd rather walk than fight its gearbox!

A good all-rounder sounds good to me!

Im sorry i am the king of off topic. If i were you i would be looking at the 115 JTD. It does make financial sense. I wouldnt say it will be night and day better than the 1.6 but with your budget the car is likely to have less mechanical problems.

I have the 1.4 and it really is a lovely engine. You dont have to thrash it whatsoever to get moving swiftly, but when you do thrash it is has pretty impressive performance for an engine of its size. In my experience of having friends with similar sized engined cars it will outpace any in its class. Plus it sounds rather nice and gives you very good fuel economy :)

Well, I am now back on the road. :slayer:

Respect to the diesel fans, but I was persuaded by messrs. Fletch, Bolty et al, that the 1.4 is the car to replace my old 1.6 with.

Found a reputable local dealer (established 30 years) offering a 2004 Active Aircon 1.4 with 12 months MOT, short tax, fresh service and cambelt change, new rear exhaust, nearly new tyres, 3 months warranty.....£1,600. So I've ended up with a car two years younger than my previous one, in much better nick and it's cost me next to nothing!!

The mileage is a tad above average but knowing what I do about Fiat engines I'd say she is nicely run in with 70k on the clock!.....and I LOVE HER!!!

SO quiet and smooth, nippy as f**k.....and best of all, I keep having to look at the 'average MPG' to try and believe my eyes...... Last time I checked the 1.6 it was averaging 32mpg. Virtually never got above 36mpg. This car is indicating an average MPG of 42mpg without making the slightest changes to my application of the accelerator!! That is VERY significant. In fact my savings in fuel will probably be worth a third of the cost of the car over the next year or so. (y)

Crashed my car.....what a result!! :yum:
