So you are going to refurb the Strada alloys and fit them to the car?

I don't like the GT 5-spokes even if they are Punto - I generally hate black wheels anyway. Still prefer the originals for this car, but I guess they could go on the Panda....

And I still say no to Alfa seats!

That all depends on the weight of the seats. The original seats are barely marked and certainly the best 90's interior I've seen on a while so swapping for the sake of it would be futile. Besides the Alfa could be an easy turn around yet to pay for more bits.

I'm not fitting a turbo. N/A to turbo even from the parts bin can be a monumental faff and from other attempts I've read about on the forum unreliable, costly in the bhp/£ stakes and most of the converted cars end up as "unfinished" or "spares or repairs" classifieds or eBay fodder.

The Strada wheels need a surface polish, tyres and spacers all round. I need to get the car taxed this month and the rear suspension fixed first. So she'll roll on the GT wheels for the time being. ;)

That's an interesting Tax disc holder...

First drive.

The brake upgrade was a waste of effort. Just like my Panda I don't need to slow down for most corners. Three wheeling roundabouts and the fuel light must be faulty as the £10 (1.5 gallons) lasted nine miles. ;)

I've just spent a good half hour going through the paperwork trying to solve a mystery.

My Punto is as quick point to point as my old N/A 16V Coupe'.

The engine feels flat up until 3,000rpm then she takes off. I think there's been a bit of cam' work or something else internal as there's nothing obvious outside. Easily as quick as my old Coupe' and as fast as a my old BMW 320i. With handling almost as good as my Panda I have another question.

Why did Fiat put the 1242 16V in the Sporting?

Apart from a being a little understeery close to the limit and pivoting lift offiness (roundabouts rule) she's sharp, quick and reasonably fast.

Now I'm thinking of way of making her a little less unreasonable. ;)

more than likey just cause the 16v is FIRE based engine and thus shares most of its parts with all the other cars in the range then (and now even).

It could also be to do with some random emissions law that happened around then, although i'm just guessing at that one.

I never had a 1.6sporting but same engine family as the GT engine and i have had one of them. It was a handful that car, not dangerous or anything but as you say it has pronounced liftoff oversteer etc. At end of the day i'm sure it was just a money thing really and truth be told its an ancient engine, things move on. Out and out speed the valver is much the same as the 1.6 but i think the 1.6 will be much better low down as even in my cinq the valver engine is a bit weak really until you are revving the nuts off it, makes a great noise though :)

Fire engines are defo easier to work on though, so much more room for your fingers, and things come out so much easier.

End of the day though, Fiat endlessly so things that seem incomprehensible - thats just how they roll.

She's definitely as quick as my old Coupe'. I did an unofficial (unrecorded) quarter earlier. I dare say the MkII HGT is more of a spiritual successor than the FIRE Sporting's.

The HGT was meant to be the new GT but that's an accolade it never deserved in my opinion.

I'm going to jump right off the fence here and say that compared to my phase II Uno turbo the Punto GT I test drove felt slow, slugish, heavy and vague in comparison. Also nowhere near the head room I was accustomed to.

My Sporting has the vague steering to a degree but the engine is more progressive and even with the rattly rear beam the car feels more planted than the GT.

I'm thinking of solid mounts for the subframe as I can feel it wondering and don't know that new bushes will solve that.

well i not been in an unoT, but i have always imagined they would be a bit like a GT but better lol - more raw. Same as i see seicentos and cinquecentos, they share so many parts they are almost the same car but the cinq is a bit lighter, and just better.

I can't see that it should feel more planted than a GT, there is basically no difference between the two bar different actual shocks and springs and the rear brakes are different. They all have the same basic setup so it shouldn't be any less or more planted than a GT with the same shocks and springs really.

Having said all that, does the 90 have the rear anti-rollbar?

I've been thinking (I know) my Uno rally car had a 1.4 10.5cr block from a Tipo ie, Uno turbo head, twin webers and a Van Aaken 280/260 cam'. Piper do a 280/258 but the rally car was terrible on the road.

Piper also do a "fast road" 270/250 and an "ultimate road" 276/250 cam'.

I'm not sure what would be best for the 90 1.6 but with a little head work, injectors, exhaust and induction 120bhp should be achievable without upsetting the neighbors (I miss my rally car).
