Dear Stilo-ers,

I have a problem that needs sorting out ... but to BEGIN sorting out the problem that i have 1st i would REALLY appreciate if someone could tell me the answers to the following:

1) Does my Fiat Stilo 1.6 16V have a PCV Valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve)??
2) Does my Fiat Stilo 1.6 16V have an EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve)??
3) Finally, if the answers to questions 1 and 2 are No and No then are these PCV &/Or EGR Valves only on bigger engines such as V6 and V8's?

These answers will really help me with my problem which i would be glad to detail soon as i know where i stand lol

If you want an insight into my problem.. it involves a "Sucking Exhaust instead of Blowing Exhaust, Engine stalling if Oil Cap removed, and Litres of Mysteriously Disappearing Oil".

Many Thanks :worship:, MiniMonster

Engine sucking air in through the exhaust and disappearing oil is usually incorrectly fitted timing belt making the valve timing incorrect. Exhaust vave is open when engine is on its induction stroke. Had a new belt fitted recently?

You dont have an EGR valve

You have crankcase ventilation but not so much a ventilation valve

First of all EEK! Second EGR is on diesels and as far as i’m aware stilos don’t have PCV but there is a cam re-circulator that feeds into the intake manifold (at the flap).. Lastly.. i’m not particularly good when it comes to cars.. BUT i can’t imagine what you can do to an engine to make it suck air in via the exhaust!!! Apart for mounting the engine in reverse! :ROFLMAO:

Correct, I remember reading about this very issue a few years back (not on Stilo's though). Timing well out!

if timing is out by this much wouldn't the valves be striking on pistons? the impression i get is that it actually fires up ?!

No they'd need to be a long way out before valve to piston collision happens. It'll start and run with the valve timing quite a bit out of synch, though with a somewhat lumpy tickover, then the ECU does its best to compensate and disguises a lot

Getting a 1.6 timing belt on wrong seems to be a pastime by so many garages including Fiat ones I'm surprised to say. Too much reliance on alignment tools that are improperly used, a lack of basic knowledge and that all important final checking means the customer is too often left to find out the hard way
