Filled my wife's Multi up to the brim at the weekend. No probs at first but after a couple of journeys up & down the M56 it started to idle very roughly. No probs at all when running at full power though.

The engine warning light has now come on & the car is starting to really struggle when idling at junctions/traffic lights etc. Otherwise though it's running fine.

Coil & injectors were replaced at the begining of the year so don't think it's that - any ideas? Could it be the fuel?

Update for you all...apparently the engine light wasn't coming on while driving - only when it cut out - which would be normal? Took it to my local garage & they've had a good listen to the engine, he's saying it could well be something to do with the timing or a loose pulley on the cambelt...and to be fair to him, the engine does sound rough when you listen closely to the belts...

Further update - complete change of cambelt, pulleys & water-pump. Not too bad at £240 I don't think - and judging by the state of the old belt, not before time either! However, car is still running very roughly, cutting out while reversing and slowing down at junctions...is this is a simple timing issue? No warning lights coming on at all until the whole damn thing cuts out!

Any ideas? Thanks folks!

year model etc

i had this problem with one of my multi's, when the car next cuts out, if it is safe to do so jump out and open the fuel filler cap and see if you can hear a rush of air thanks

It's a 2001 1.6lx...

Back at the garage, the mechanic discovered that the NEW belt tensioner was knackered (that's a first!) - picked it up this morning, all running fine. Mrs HM took it out mid-morning and it packed up at junctions, roundabouts etc again.

She's now just rung from home to say it's sat on our drive with no power at all - not turning over, no electrics...could this be something as simple as an alternator going belly up?

Hi did you ever get any further with this as we have now got a very similar problem. Car went in for an MOT and cambelt apart from a very intermitent problem which appears unrelated. Cambelt and Aux belt changed starts and runs fine from cold then ater a few mins starts running rough when stationary at times almost stalling. Went back into the garage to check cambelt etc told all ok, coil and leads I changed earlier in the year but didnt get round to doing the plugs so they did that as well. Picked it up again seemed ok then the idle rough running. Fine over the 10 mark on the rev counter but let the revs drop and it is very rough. Any ideas so that I can maybe help the garage to sort it out. Car as above 53 plate 1.6 Petrol.

I can't give you a solution but if you find out what the problem is could you post it as my 1.6 petrol multipla is doing this after a cambelt change and the garage have no idea why.

Hi Gilly

Turned out that they hadn't done the cambelt change properly so that might be what's causing your issue! Something to do with one of the pre-tensioners not being attached correctly - apparently the Multipla engine is not like every other car and some mechanics are not aware of the differences in the set-up....

Hope that helps?!
