1.4 to a 1.8

Looking through the Bravo guide at the different bravos it would seem a sensible option for me to change my 1.4 to the 1.8GT/HLX.
You get more toys-ABS/Heated Seats/E mirrors/Stronger suspension- more powerful and most importantly more MPG. Road tax and insurance would be more expensive but i think the 1.8 is a lot cheaper here in Ireland than the 1.4 to buy........There's a 2.0 HGT (1999) in the Autotrader for 4500 euros.
Any thoughts

The 1.8 and 2.0 are completely different. You will not get more mpg from the 2.0 than your 1.4, but you will get many more smiles. My 1.8 averages 30mpg, for 10 minute commutes.
