General 1.4 Conversion to TURBO

when i had a 1.4 i looked into tuning it and phoned a company out of my mates fast ford mag and they said they could probably get about 150bhp but it would cost about £7000 and that they could fit a 20vt cheaper, if youre realy intent on making youre 1.4 quicker buy some forged pistons (low comp) and stick a eaton m45 supercharger on it that coupled with a hgt MAF, a new cam, inlet, injectors and re-map by way of piggy back would see you about 160bhp and would defonatley be faster than a hgt lol

Unless you uprated the cams in an HGT and remapped it. Or as you say dropped the 20VT engine in.

If you go the 1.4 route then it will also need brakes and suspension upgrades. Also a fabricated induction manifold which would be trial and error. After that you are going to have an unreliable engine as the oil feeds are poor at best. 7k for this you say  thats a lot of money for not a lot of BHP.

it is thats why i baught a hgt lol that had been tuned at avanti motorsport lol i dont know what had been done to it but it pissed all over a mates vts and i mean 4-5 cars infront of him at 70mph lol then after thraping it to within an inch of its life i learnt that cars cant go over roundabouts a couple of weeks later lol hence the new hgt project hehehehe roll on m62 hehehehehe

Too be honest pal I'm not really interested in a turbo in my bravo and don't much fancy the consumption of a 1.8. And being 21 a 1.8 would be too costly on insurance (at the moment)

I think i may be interested in a 1.9 jtd though. as they are 100 bhp and it could be remapped up to a tasty amount. However which would cost more on insurance a remapped 1.9 jtd or a remapped 1.2 16v?

Honestly you'd get better consumption out the 1.8 than the 1.4, i've heard even my HGT gets about the same fuel consumption.

Insurance wise, modding the car with a turbo will be as much of a killer as a 1.8, in fact even more so i'd imagine. As the word 'turbo' seems to make the insurance company's either rub there hands, or laugh.

Sounds like it was pretty nippy (y)

Although the HGT should be pulling away from a VTS above 70 as even the stock HGT is around 25bhp more. The saxo is quick due to power to weight, weighing in around 940kg as opposed to the HGT 1180kg.
Saxo 127 bhp per ton
HGT 124 bhp per ton

This means to 60 both should be nearly identical but as the speed increases the Hgt will start to pull away.

Yours must have been seriously tweeked to pull 5 car lengths by 70 or the VTS might also have been off tune. My coupe would struggle and its running a power to weight of around 190bhp per ton. :)

the garage i baught it from said that it was running about 180bhp but they had no history for it lol thats why i got it for £1200 on a 97rplate. the stuff i knew it had was as follows:
full magnex exshuast a decat, blue injectors( i dont know what cc) but i know hgts are green, manifold, green cotton airfilter located down the front bumper. the guys at top gear said it would have most probably been a head cam an chip kit if it was done at avanti. when i whent to buy the one i own now i thought it was ****ed lol cos it felt realy slow compared but after a go in a few i realised it wasnt. i must add though due to me driving a 1.4 before that i wasnt experienced enough to driv it and ran over a roundabout lol witch ****ed all the suspension up aswell as bending the front legs, amazingley the tyres didnt bust but when i was driving it home the front left wheel came off in traffic lol so it had to go.

i think that the hgt really is under estimated cos it doesnt have a reputation like the vts or the coupe 20vt, although thats what is going in now lol ive turned to the darkside lol

The head work would probably explain it, cams would explain the bhp increase. along with the larger injectors and the increased breathing mods. I heard of a coupe 20v running a similar setup. It was meant to be running around 180bhp.

The reason why the Bravo Hgt in stock form has been missed by most is because it is not a Hot Hatch as such. It is a powerful usable everyday car I would describe it as a tourer. Even the interior is far from GTi spec. Handling is a little bit compromised to give a comfortable ride and although it grips in corners it is a little roly.. A stiffer spring set up will resolve this as what we have done with our one.

As an everyday car that has plenty of power I couldn't recommend the HGT higher. I used to have a Renault 19 16v which is in a similar league to a Peugeot 205Gti on the handling/performance. As a drivers car it was awesome heavy weighted steering heavy clutch and an engine that had to be utterly thrashed to go anywhere. However to live with everyday it was a nightmare.

The 20v coupe is a little better handling than the HGt it has all the same running gear and chassis as the HGT however the dampers are uprated and so are the brakes. Strange thing is though the coupe 20v gives a much faster feeling of speed than the HGT. There is no difference, probably the lower seating position.

For best bang for bucks though get a turbo coupe. It accelerates the same as a normal 20v then you hit 3k revs and  :D :D its gone :)

thats what im doing mate lol well im putting the engine in mine aswell as the dash lol ive sort of sorted the brakes but havent paid for them yet. i will have a few things up for grabs though as the one ive got at the min has denso irridiun spark plugs, brand new k&n 57i kit, fse boost valve all of wich will be rendered useless when the new engine goes in lol, i was supposed to be supercharging it but now ive got a year to mess with it im gunna go all out with it.ive alrady sold the charger to a mate but im keeping the intercooler as a spare.
