General 1.4 Conversion to TURBO

Greetings.

(My Bravo is a SXI 1.4 Bravo, R Reg)

After inspection of my Engine a few of us believe we should be able to convert it to a turbo.

It would involve a fair bit of work i.e. upgrading the manifold, new ECU etc.

Now here's my problem.....
I'm a computer whiz not a mechanic... I can do most stuff or follow instructions fine car wise.
However, finding what parts are compatible is where I'm falling down.

I searched the net and can't find what I need i.e parts.

Any help would be greatly appricated.

Not worth converting to a turbo as the 1.4 is the worst engine in the range very unreliable with no mods let alone adding a turbo.

I don't mind if it won't be worth it in the long run.... by the time I finish there won't be much of the origional engine left m8.

This is a long term project that will upgrade almost everything except the main block itself.

I love my Bravo and want to get every bit of power out of it without changing the engine itself. I want people to say "thats a nice car, what running?" and then to see the look when I say it's a 1.4.

Then get the 1.2 and get it running more power and then convert it to a turbo. I've heard word of near 120bhp out of the 1.2 n/a Even more amusing to see people's responses then

yeah but its kinda not so cool when the standard HGT or even just the 1.8 has more power from the factory.

Only reason to tune a small engine is because its the only one available, eg, a cinq/sei.

Your probably looking at around 120-130hp out of a tuned turbo 1.4 engine. Sounds kinda cool but when youve spent thousands and it cant keep up with a standard hgt, its not so cool.

get hold of an old 1372cc engine if your after a 1.4 which is proven in terms of turbos in both the uno T and Punto GT. though fitting it might be difficult. the bravo 1.6 is a 16v version of the similar engine. which could probably prove a much better project.

if you really must do it, go down the 1.2 route, plenty of people have done this so you'll be able to get parts easily, plus you'll end up with a faster car and to be honest the 1.2 is a much better engine than the 1.4, its a revvy little bugger, and you can also fit the 6 speed gearbox from a mk2 punto sporting which will really make all the difference, its a great gearbox. if you get a 1.2 turbo making 120bhp coupled to the 6 speed box you'd have a bloody good fun car.

all for crazy ideas but a 1.4 turbo, if you want to spend less get more power and go down a proven route why not try the 2.0 20v turbo conversion.

A sensible comment. Will cost less and biggest return for your money.

Either that or the 16v turbo option. There is a guy on the coupe forum who has done it and runs 330bhp in his bravo. Now thats braggin rights.

yeah like that, i can only guess he used a stilo 2.4 but i dont really know, could just be a rebored 2.0....

was shown it before and i thought i heard of it on FCCUK but no idea what he did?

If you really have your heart set on turboing your 1.4 then i think everything is going to have to be custom madem e.g manifolds plumbing e.t.c dont if anything off any other car would fit seriously doubt it though.

Ok just out of interest how much (estimate) would it cost to boost a standar 1.4 12v from 80bhp to 110bhp and how much would it cost to boost a standard 1.2 16v from 82bhp to 110bhp.

Because I'm quite interested now in getting my car upto about 110bhp. especially after reading this thread. Plus I did not know you could turbo a 1.2 bravo.

(Preferably without going down the turbo route)

Just buy a bravo 1.8 HLX! they have 115bhp as standard and wont effect the insurance nearly as much as a turbo!

Too be honest pal I'm not really interested in a turbo in my bravo and don't much fancy the consumption of a 1.8. And being 21 a 1.8 would be too costly on insurance (at the moment)

I think i may be interested in a 1.9 jtd though. as they are 100 bhp and it could be remapped up to a tasty amount. However which would cost more on insurance a remapped 1.9 jtd or a remapped 1.2 16v?





(however saying all this there is a really nice white hlx in the altrincham area that i see everyday. yummy looking car.)

A remapped 1.2 16v is only going to get you to 90bhp max though, unless you do some other work alongside it. There's no turbo unit specifically available that I know of, though when I was looking into it, there is one for the Corsa 1.2 16v, which has similar power output. Never looked any further into it, but for peace of mind you're going to want other work done, which is going to drive the cost up?
