Technical 1.3 Multijet 90 Turbo Lag

Have heared from a well connected friend that there is a solution to this!

the problem is that the remap required makes the MJ 90 faster in every respect than the 1.4 petrol sporting so Fiat will not officially put it on general release:mad: as it would be faster than there performance models

this apparently is one of the reasons behind the model / engine /transmission changes as the "lag cured" 1.3 mj 90 in 6 speed form has a faster 0-60 than the 1.9 sporting

so the 1.3 90MJ is now no longer available in 5 door 6 speed form as with the remap because of the lighter engine etc and lack of goodies it would be the fastest car in the current model range

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so i did buy the right car :slayer: 3 guesses to the next steps and a horses head in the bed of the Fiat management  bloody marketeers

Hi all.

New to this forum but some interesting reading.

My wife has an 18 Month old GP mjet 90 in Bright Red (whatever thats called, it cost £300 extra)
Anyway, she loves the car despite being in the dealers for the 4th time today.

The thing she hates most is the turbo lag.

Does anyone know if there are any fixes under warranty?

My local tuning man quoted £400 for 115 bhp and much less lag.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the economy. Diesel is now at least £1.22 per litre. Buy a diesel with a larger engine and you will be shelling out more. The MJ90 has plenty of torque for overtaking and has is a quiet little motor. Yes, there is turbo lag but there are worse aspects of a diesel engine - for example, noise, vibration and poorer economy.

Sorry I have to disagree with you

One of the things that always bugged me about the MJ90 was that it was no more economical than the 2.0L Peugeot 307 HDI 110 (that had been remapped to 130bhp) that it replaced. Smaller capacity doesn't always mean more economy

There is not much to choose betwee the mj90 and the 1.4 sporting as it is so wouldn't take much to make it quicker. The aftermarket remap guys can get 120 bhp and 265nm torque easily out of the mj 90 as it is

PLEEEAAASSSEEEE tell me where the people are that can get this sort of power from a 90 mj!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife is bugging me BIG time about her turbo lag.

She drives like a bloke too, so no airy fairy t--s on the dash board push me pull me driving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't see how it is possible to get rid of the turbo lag on the 1.3MJ90. Until the turbo spins one car only expect to experience the power of a small, 1.3 litre diesel engine.

The computer on mine regularly displayed an average of 58mpg on my longer-than-average weekly journeys yet the torque was always there (after a second or two!) for overtaking!

the focus is the same (n)

Is this the 1.6? My reason for concern is that I have ordered the 2.0D in a Volvo C30! I was tempted by the economy of the 1.6D but felt that the performance limitations of the engine were intolerable in a coupe.

Been driving my 1.3 90 for 3 months now, its a 2006 with 19,000 on the clock.
I keep reading about bad turbo lag on these cars, but in my experience with my car it seems very insignificant. OK its not as quick off the mark as a petrol engine, but its never embarrased me when pulling away from a roundabout etc.

May be its down to the amount of miles on the engine or my style of driving, dunno, but I'm extremely happy with my 1.3 GP.

As for the mpg....... WOW.

The worst I've seen is 57mpg, and that was deliberately ragging it to see a result !!....... Best I've seen is 71.4mpg, that was on my normal route to work last Tuesday morning, 12 mile journey, first 6 miles stop / start, last 6 miles of B road 50 / 60 mph not particularily trying to save fuel, the road conditions dictate driving style.
Normaly I get 64 /66 on that route.

Can't fault the car. Brilliant :):)

yes the 1.6

its actually geared quite well to compensate but I have still had a few moments pulling out o find a complete lack of power below about 2k revs.

Glad I have gone for the 2.0D then! Thanks for that.

gruntt are you sure that you have the 90bhp? i have the same car as you and trust me i try to save fuel and my avg never gets higher than 51mpg!

you also mentioned that you don't get a lot of lag, now i know that the 75bhp doesn't get a lot of lag and gets the mpg that you mentioned. not certain but i've got feelings that you have the 75bhp version.

one way to check is on the chassis where the door lock is, there should be a plate there stating the car type.

You got me panicking there, just been out to the car & checked, 1.3 Multijet (90) Dynamic :).
The mpg,s I quoted in my post are the real thing, no bull****, honest.
This mornings trip to work .... 64 mpg, and it will be very similar going back home. Like other posts have said dont TRY to save fuel, drive normal, dont let the engine labour in too high a gear, & if you have the sixth gear avoid using it until your'e speed is between 70 / 80 mph.

If your mpg dont get any better than it is at the moment I'd be talking to your Fiat dealer or a trusted independant.

BTW have you attempted to do an oil change yet, I cant fathom out how to remove the oil filter plastic dome cover thingy ???

I had a 1.3 M-jet 90, 6 speed and used to regularly get 58 mpg. My M-jet Sporting gets 48 regularly on the same journeys. The turbo-lag of the 1.3 didn't really bother me - the car made up for it with its quiet little engine and impressive torque and economy.

The 1.9 Sporting engine is a rough beast in comparison. There is nothing wrong with mine but the whole car vibrates more, particularly the pedals and steering wheel, at low speeds and tickover. It is also much noisier than the 1.3. This is the penalty for impressive performance!

90hp 5 speed dynamic has 63mpg showing average on the trip comp today. Lag is slightly noticable but i instinctively compensate the revs and clutch. She's been mine for a year now and i love her to bits. The ability to pull and overtake on the motorway really makes me smile. It's very quiet for a diesel and i don't regret the decision to buy. Yes other manufaturers make larger engines that are as economical (mpg and C02) but they don't look as good as my GP :p

The 1.6Mjt from the Bravo for the GP is something i'm keeping my eye on!
