General  1.2 mpg ?

on a 200 mile motorway journey i averaged 40.2 mpg at around 70(ish)
the same 200 mile journey back, didnt touch 70 once i got 48.9 mpg
just crusing around to work and back, and the occasional random drive im managing to get 42 mpg, its funny how the live read out drops to 11.3........ hehe

Remember that Fiat are Italian therefore love revs. Iusually rev mine to at least 4k before changing gear and take it to 6k at least every couple of days just to keep it loose. This gives 45+ on my 60mile commute in my 1.2. Changing up with a small engine at low revs just pumps in fuel that engine cant cope with. Engines have a "sweet spot" and you can feel in 1.2 its around 3-4k rpm.

No the highway code is not law, per say. However:
And i quote Part I 38(7)

I think that speaks for its self.

But still, there is no reason that anyone has given for coasting that makes any sense. All it does is make you more likely to have an accident, and be held responsible for the accident.

Didn't knew coasting out of gear is illegal! I checked the Romanian law and guess what? It is illegal here too! This is really surprising! I know that coasting in gear wastes no fuel as opposed to doing it in gear which will, but I always coast out of gear as much as I can! Why? For the pure smoothness of the way the car goes. For me, comfort is priority #1. I have observed that taking your foot off the accelerator while in gear (especially in lower gears) does create a sudden (nauseating) diving motion, so I always break with break and clutch at the same time. (Much more control of the comfort of the breaking period) I also, always cost out of gear - most of the time the engine is at tick over - also for general comfort.

In fact, when I took my driving license, I did coast out of gear on more than few ocassions. The policeman next to me didn't object! :)

So yeah...the only time I do coast in gear is when I'm approaching the exit ramp of a highway. I'm coming in at 130km/h...I shift to 4th....then let it reach 90...then 3rd....let it reach 60...and then back to 4th to maintain 60.

read the thread mate, it isn't illegal!!!

also there are many posts in this thread that explain why you shouldn't coast out of gear, 1 is you hammer your brakes, 2 you are wasting petrol because the amount the ECU puts in to keep the rev's at idle is more than is needed to "make the spark" needed to keep the engine running when the wheel's are doing all the work 3 you are in less control of the vehicle
