Good evening all

My daughters Y reg Mia has developed a engine knocking noise, the oil lamp is permently on but dip stick shows plenty of oil, called out my usual mechanic came this evening and said, big end bearings, said he'd give me a call tomorrow with a price.

1) Is this a big job.
2) What sort of money are we looking at.
3) Is it worth spending the money on it done over 100,000 miles but is a good running and my daughter loves the car.

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Oil warning lamp on despite plenty of oil suggests either oil pump worn or oilways blocked (such that pressure switch not operating). Could have resulted in wear of the big end shells.

Alternatively, if it got low on oil at some point, that could directly have lead to wear in the big end shells. However, you'd still need to account for loss of oil pressure.

Repair depends on whether or not the crank is damaged. Can't comment on repair cost but if it includes replacement crank (or regrind and oversize shells), as well as potentially needing attention to oil pump, it's not sounding cheap.
