Hi there,

Ive recently bought a fiat grande punto (56) 1.2 8v from a local dealer, everything going well so far apart from one rather annoying problem i cant seem to pinpoint. Checked the forum for similar issues and tried all cures and so far still no solution :(. The rattle occurs when the engine has raised to normal operating temperature, and is coming from the right hand side of the cam belt, it is a rather loud tapping/ rattling sound, especially when the engine is straining i.e. going up hill, or if im throwing it around abit. Its supposed to be a quiet running engine, and this noise is ruining for me what is a brilliant car so far :(. Any solutions to my problem would be much appreciated.
Kindest Regards
Simon :)

Hi & Welcome to The Fiat Forum. You do have the correct grade & amount of oil in the car yes? OK, well take a look at the air filter mounts... I mean a good close look... many rattles have been down to one of those failing. Make sure the simple stuff is OK before being over concerned about what else it might be. Or of course if "recently bought" means the seller may still have warranty interests then see what they say maybe?

Does it doing it whilst stationary as well?

Mine did this at about 2.5k RPM, it was the airbox not seated properly at the back (I'd had it off to change the split breather pipe)

It may also be worth cable-tieing your CAF to it's bracket. My rubber thingy had completely disintegrated so that was rattling as well. I also noticed some hoses/wires/pipes had come out of their brackets as well so I stuck them back in.

Hey, thank you both for your speedy reply's. Thing is i use my car rather alot and sticking it in the dealership whilst they fiddle around with it for days on end really isnt an option. I know it is definatly nothing to do with the airbox or piping around it because the cable ties have already been applied before i purchased the car. As i said before this loud rattling is coming from the back of the engine, just to the right of the cam belt i had some spray applied to the pulleys of the belt to see if it was any of them at fault, and its not from the pulleys, its really annoying and we all love a car that runs smoothly and sounds great. Dont get me wrong, it runs fine and i dont have any performance issues, its just this tapping makes it sound like ive got 2 hammers belting together as i apply full throttle or if im going up hill. It rattles slightly upon startup but doesnt rattle on tickover unless its warm. All levels on fluids are bang on (OCD with things like this) as i believe it may be my fault for the rattle. But nothing i try resolves it. Sorry for the small reply btw :p

Naaa it was a local general car dealership i got it from, im really tempted to just take it to fiat and have them sort it out. But that will be really costly im guessing. :(

Depending on how recent "recently bought" is- your best idea is to take it back to where you bought it and complain. They may agree to have a look themselves FOC, or cover the cost of it going to the Fiat Dealer.

No harm in asking.

Noise getting worse as the week goes along. Its going back to the dealer on wednesday, its a more mechanical rattling than the engine moving around on its mounts :(

Did you get a outcome of this thread?. Mines doing the same, had new mounts fitted and also not got an airbox. Fitted a gsr and forge breather so cant be them.

hi, have you had any joy with this??? ive got the same problem and its really annoying me now i recently drove from newcastle to skegness and when i got back the banging/ratteling noise got worse im worried incase its ready to give in, mine hasnt got the cable ties on any thing and the airbox is properly sitting in its place, it could be me being stupid but im positive the noice is coming from the engine/inside of it :-( :-( dean

Crikey, this looks serious mines just started doing exactly the same. It's a 1.3 Mjet Dynamic Diesel. Running perfectly but the noise has got worse. I was just about to book into Stoneacre for a diagnostic session but I'll check the other points first & advise.

ive realised mine only does this when the engines hot, when ive went to show people the car makes a fool out of me and dosent do it cos its cold, has any one found the problem yet??

Hi there, my punto 8v 1.2 active sport rattles too and i get leaks from the rocker cover. The oil in these is 10 watt 50 and quite thin and i'm wondering if it's possible to get away with a thicker oil. Also, i'm sure these engines have cam shims which would explain the rattling noises as these things wear out but will check this out and report back. The last fiat i owned was a Bravo 12 valve and the cam feed pipe suffered a blockage and the noise was actually more of a screech ( metal on metal). I sorted this by removing the oil feed pipe and soaking in a 50\ 50 caustic soda bath, and after refitting changed the oil and filter. The spray holes on fiat cam oil feeds are stupidly small.

These engines do have tappet shims and likely the wear on these is probably what is making all the noise. They are cheap to replace around £32 for a set of 8, plus labour (unless you can do the job yourself). The oil is what i was sold as being standard for my car, if they've sold me the wrong oil i'll be having words with them you can bet.

The oil that is in is actually 10 /40 semi synthetic and not 10\ 50 as i previously stated. I'm no expert on oil, but in the workshop manual it does state that you can use 5/40 or 10/ 40 semi synthetic, i'm wondering about the difference. Do we have an oil expert on hand ? any help appreciated.
I'm considering taking the rocker top off and taking a look at the state of the cam, i've a feeling there could be restricted oil flow, in which case excessive wear to the cam lobes.
