General 03 stilo 1.6 active sport when is the cambelt change?

Just looking to get a car for my girlfriend and stumbled across a nice stilo
Very cheap and looks very nice also with full mot and 6 months tax, just been serviced but when i popped the famous question "when was cambelt and water pump last replaced?", seller swiftly answed "dont have to change cambelt in this model till 140000 miles or 10 years!!"
I know that techonology gets better and better but i struggle to beleive this as i owned plenty of fiat and alfas and i always changed cambelt after 36000 or 3 years! What does everybody thinks? When should cambelt be replaced on stilo 1.6? Car has over 90000 miles now!

If it's a DOHC 16V engine: 36000mls ( 60.000km) OR three years, whatever comes first.

I thought so...10 years is a long time for a cambelt! But looking at that stilo is a miss for me as is a 3 door and i need a 5 door...so looking at fiat idea as they are pretty cheap...

I changed my cam belt when i first got the car when it was on 47,000 miles and it pritty much fell off ( i think the tensioner failed) so if i was you id get it done asap! its quite an easy job. i did mine in an afternoon.

Ditto. 47k and just over 5 years old when I got it changed on my Stilo when I got it.

Now on 94k and 2.5 years on so will be being done again soon

I too have bought an 04 Stilo Active Sport with 33k on it in the last couple of months. I believe the recommended cam belt change mileage/time period is 72k or 5 years whichever comes first. I did mine immediately because I had no evidence that it had been changed after the 5 year period even though it had only covered 33k. The time period is very important as the belt is under tension throughout that length of time and could fail if it is left any longer. . . "IF IN DOUBT - GET IT CHANGED". Hope this helps. Regards

I always change cambelt when i buy a new car or i make sure that garage does that
im not buying that particular stilo now as my girlfriends wants 5 door car (another baby on way) i just found very optimistic that the seller would say that cambelt doesnt need changing untill 140000 miles or 10 years!
I knew it was a lie as i had plenty of italian cars in the past and still drive italian cars now...thanks guys but looking at stilo 5 door now...whats the abarth selespeed like??

Really sorry to hijack this thread but it has just got me thinking about my cam belt and it has never been changed at near 80k. Are they expensive to change at a garage because I'm not very mechanically minded.

ok if looked after, a nightmare if they've got niggles. FSH is a must, but tbh if you want it as an every day car I'd suggest it's not the model for you

Get it changed as is a vital part
Part itself is not expensive but you have to change tensioner and water pump i think at same time
i had my multipla jtd cambelt replaced in may and that cost me £250 including parts

Do it yourself and faf it, and it'll be a new engine job, so be sure your happy with what your doing before hand
