Ok so I need to replace the clutch on a 2011 Fiat 500 0.9 Twin Air. Any tips much appreciated.

I've done a few clutches, but never on a fiat and I can't see how to remove the half shafts from the gearbox . Some threads talk of removing the wheel lower link from the wishbone and tie rod pin so you can swing the wheel out the way and remove the shaft from the wheel bearing. Then just pull the shaft from the gearbox?

How is it held in and how much force to remove it - will i need a sliding hammer?

One of the half shafts has a plate a plate with 4 bolts do i remove this?

I presume the gearbox oil will need to be drained - what spec oil is used. Also is it just fill to the fill plug level?

Thanks in anticipation,

The fist pic is the shaft with the plate, the second pic the other shaft and the last is the gearbox - with i presume the drain and fill plugs.

Ok thanks, yes some useful guides for the Punto.

Looks like the shafts just slide out once the front hubs are released from the struts.

Anyone removed the starter from a twin air (assuming it needs to come off). I can’t see how you access both the bolts?

Ok both half shafts off, I took the clip off the inner boots and have left the cups that the shaft fit into in the gearbox. Starter removed, there were 3 bolts the top was very difficult to acces.

Anyone know how to remove the gear selector clips? Can’t see how they come off?

I don't have direct experience of this model but have messed about with versions of the Panda and Punto. I would just caution you to be very sure about your drain and fill plugs before "attacking" them. In your picture the large plug in the side of the box - under what I would guess to be the reverse light switch? - I mean the one that takes an "Allen" hex type key to remove it - looks most likely to be the level/filler plug. I don't see a drain plug? On my Panda it's at the back of the final drive part of the casing. The two large hexagonal headed bolts in your picture look more like they are probably securing bolts? The one in the bottom of the casing in particular makes me nervous. I suspect "bits" are likely to fall off inside the 'box if you slacken it?

Sorry. In my last post I never said anything about removing the driveshafts from the 'box.

The solution you've come up with is actually quite a good one as it will stop oil leaking out! If you needed to remove the whole shaft for some reason - perhaps to exchange it for a new shaft - that inner joint is held in place by a "snap ring" inside the differential. The recommended way the to remove it is with a large pry bar, or screwdriver, levering carefully under the inner edge of the joint and the gearbox casing. The best technique is to give it a quick and quite violent "jerk". The shaft should just "pop" out. Many manufacturers do it this way but I would caution you if working on a 'box you're unfamiliar with. If you are removing both drive shafts, I once fell foul of a box where the spider gears inside the diff cage were located in place by the driveshafts. Removing one shaft created no problem but removing the other one as well allowed the spider gears to move out of alignment with the casing and I had a devil of a job, working through the shaft hole on one side of the case, to get the thrust washer and gear lined up - with a long screwdriver - for the shaft to be reentered on the other side! Once you know about this problem you can overcome it by just sticking a short length of cut off broom handle in the first hole (to locate everything in place) before removing the shaft on the other side. Easy when you know, an absolute pain in the bum when you don't. On most final drives the spider gears are positively located so this problem doesn't arise and i don't think any of the Fiat boxes suffer from this "curse".

Gear selector cables are usually "snap" fittings. You just pop them off with a screwdriver. and I think ours are like that? If not I would expect to see a locating pin (split pin?) or other fixing which it's obvious would need to be removed.

Regarding your gear oil. I'm very fussy about my lubricants and would ring my local main dealer about what to use. Alternatively give Mike a ring at Shop4parts. He supplies genuine and quality pattern Fiat parts. I bought genuine, Fiat spec, Tutela gear oil for our Panda and my boy's Punto from him. I now buy all my Fiat "stuff" from him and find him very good .(there's a forum discount you can apply. To access it you just have to make a very small donation to the forum) Last time I ordered shipping was free on orders over £25.
