Hi,

Madly searching for a replacement six speed gearbox for a Grande Punto 1.9 8V. Have phoned Fiat and judging by the chassis number, (ZFA199000.00313115) it has a C544 gearbox.

Ringing around, it appears that this code is pretty much Fiat specific and cannot really be referenced against other codes? I have heard that Vauxhall also use the fiat gearbox, and possibly other car makes.

If only I could match this code against M20 or M32, then I could make some headway..:(

Can anyone in the know assist?

Car's currently booked in at the garage to have the box changed on Monday, its going to replace my daughter's smashed Seicento..

Fingers are crossed that someone can help.

Best regards

from what i read it's a Vaux ' box that FIAT use..,

SEARCH on here is pretty good, ;)
Tho whole story is that on the Early Typ 199 Grande Punto they only used the 514.5 and 514.6 both on the gas and diesel engines. Same for the Idea/Musa line.

Then with the TJet coming in, they had to fit a stronger transmission so the old 510.5 was placed in but there was a lack of suitable 6 gear transmission in the offer. So they asked opel for their M20/M32 project going under the FIAT code C544 and C542.

This was set on Abarth Puntos, Mito, Bravo Tjet and Mjet, Grande Punto 1.3 90 and 1.9 130.

Once they ceased the cooperation with Opel, C544 was discontinued and so they had to build a new 6 gear transmission, the C635 that could be found on the later Mito and Punto Evo Abarth. 500 Abarth uses the C510.5

So, actually FIAT made the C510 suit to it's Fire engines thus it would be sure easy fitting it on any Mk1 / Mk2 since it was already fitted it from the very start of the projects. Punto GT, Punto TD, JTDs, MJETs and HGT all were fitted with the 510 so any of these frames with a non conventional Fire on it could be converted to a C510 runner!

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for responding, could I 'safely' say then that a C544 is in fact the same as a M20??

Could I be sure enough as to order an M20 box??

I'm trying to program this, so that a replacement box arrives in time for Monday - when the garage is booked to do the exchange...

Oh why oh why do things have to be so complicated:eek:

What do you think?

Ahhh - just found this on a Polish forum:

'not rather too ... Probably not moved torque As for Bravo (07-09) This principle is as follows: 1.4 tjet - chest C544/M32 - Reverse the line one 1.9MJet 120 - Box C530 "5" - reverse instead of six 1.9MJet 150 - Box C530 "6" - back at the top six may be exceptions, but I have not met.

it to enjoy, I had exactly the 6b. chest in 156jtd16v (and then there was no cooperation with Opel), better than the m32 and f40 in precision turning gears and durable; comes that you have the best gearbox mounted to bravo, because in an alpha 159 with engine 1.9 8v and 16v were all the time m32, just as he entered ts 2.0 16v it fell better F40 -------------------- This is my truth, tell me yours. http://www.youtube.com / watch? v = liSxjtd16xQ - B@stard'

Apart from the last word, which I have censored - from what the translated conversation seemed to suggest at one point was that the C544 was the equilalent of the M32...???

Mightily confused..

Jon :(

In that case, have the chance of buying a recon box with all bearings changed and one if the oil galleries enlarged, (apparently one in particular can block up, leading to.oil starvation of one bearing and premature failure) for £650.

but concious that the DMF and clutch might want changing... more costs.. so could go for cheaper s/h box, but only 14 days warranty...

Life's complicated lol..

Jon :)
