Need new ECU unit for fiat doblo cargo 1.9 D. Took vehicle to "mechanic" after van kept cutting out. Several months ago he had fitted a new fuel pump. He said it was the ECU unit which was broken and tried to charge me £1300 for a new one (supply, fitting and "programmed by Fiat garage"). When I questioned him about the price he said he had already removed it and sent it to a "supplier", but he had, in fact, binned it - meaning I had to have it towed back home. I have no idea how to get the model number for a new one as I believe there are a couple of ECU units in the vehicle but under the bonnet at the top of the engine there is a pipe with a plug like part on the end and one side has two bits like female scart sockets. Can anyone advice me on how to get a new ECU - I am very reluctant to buy second hand as I know absolutely nothing about cars/vans - am I better to put it into a Fiat dealer (Arnold Clark is our local one!) Thanks for any help.

Aren't garages supposed to 'clear' work with you first before they do anything?

If they didn't clear it with you then it is down to them to put the car back together & if they have binned the unit - they may have inadvertantly damaged it, so how do you know that the ECU was the problem as now there is no way a proper garage can test it.
I'd get some advice from a no win, no fee solicitor on this one.

If they have binned your ECU then it is up to them to replace your property. That was your expensive ECU that could have been repaired or exchanged for another one.

Definitely a 'phone garage now and complain' and go into legal mode.

Also if it is a Fiat garage then get onto Fiat Customer Service
