Hi all.

A friend of mine is considering buying a Stilo (changing his old Mitsubishi Galant 2,5 V6 to either a 2,4 or JTD) and has asked for my advice.

He basically wants to know, what the main differences is between pre-2004 Stilos and post-2004 Stilos, you know what errors/faults has been fixed.
As I have a post-2004 model, I really have no idea precisely what has been changed.

I have searched the forum, but can't a complete list of changes (or at least a list of some sort).

If any one could list some of the changes, I would be very grateful. (y)

BUMP

I really need to know the answer to this. I put a deposit today on a 2003 red stilo which is in perfect condition and has had the airbag sensor fixed too but I am considering dropping it and keep looking for a 2004 or 2005. Can some one please help me out here?

Also Its a dynamic 1.2 but on the garage site its listed as a 1.2 active sound... dealer knew nothing really but it only has the basic casette head unit and hubcaps. Is the dynamic stick on false?

Thanks

Definately not dynamic, should have alloys, climate control, CD player, colour coded mirrors and door handles and a full computer. Walk away.

I have a 1.6 dynamic and hasnt got the climate control, CD player, and didnt come with Alloys has got all the other bells and whistles though ask the dealer if he will check the registration docks for you and If my memory serves me well fiat actualy took many items off the spec as time went on :)

The notion that you can buy a certain age range of Stilo and suffer less issues than another age range is rather a myth. You can get good and bad examples from all age ranges

Just concentrate on the basic facts which apply to any make of car.

  • Mileage
  • Full Service history
  • Number of owners
  • Any evidence of abuse etc.
A key factor is matching the service history against a dealer of good reputation (tricky part). You certainly want to avoid any motor that's had lots of dealer visits (which normally means lots of owners).

Cheers yeah it seemed a bit strange. Now I don't know cause the car is literally spotless. The rubber strip under the car looks brand new and no chips on the arches.

Should I go for a 2004 over a 2003? What differences are there? I know the 2006 was a newer model again but not many 2nd hand ones around

You can actually check with a dealer all the history of the repairs done on that car [if done by a dealer ]they keep all info on the data base you will need chassis No for that though Makes interesting reading some times :)

I would go for a 2004 car face lifted then and although a car is 03 reg it could be a lot older one thing will decide that though is they did modifications to the rear axle beam mounting bushes on the face lift model not putting you off the 03 though as I believe they have now sorted out a mod for the earlier cars as well where previously it was a new back axle and considerable expense :)

See I'm in the Republic of Ireland and it was imported by the garage from the North. Has service documents with not too many things.. front tyres and the airbag sensor really. Its possible the alloys were taken off the car and hubcaps fitted. Just not sure about the mix up in the names

Only you can make this decision may be if you are that bothered then it would be best to walk away I bought my car and found this site afterwards had I found this site first and read all the problems owners are having I wouldn't have bought my car but do you know what I'm glad I bought my car first the stilo is a great car fiat got some things wrong but as you read threads on here you will see that thing can be altered to eliminate the problems [spring issues for one ] read that one but dont let it cloud your judgment of the car :D you say its a minter whats the mileage is it a weekend car ?could be the reason for its immaculate condition ? Have a general look around the car see if the tyres are waring on the inside on the front and outside on the rears on test drive listen for clonking or groaning suspension could be tie bars between anti roll bar and struts [very common] check the brakes etc sure you know the kind of thing if your unhappy with the test drive put your ponts to the dealer get them done before you sign for the car etc good luck let us know how you get on (y)

Thanks for all the help. It'll be Jan before I actually buy the car but I'll have to get them to get it down from the first floor of the showroom for a proper look at it. I've wanted a Stilo for ages now despite some readings on here. Its an Italian car afterall...You gota make some compromise for such a nice car

Did you say you're in the ROI?, could be specs for Ireland are different to the mainland so perhaps it is a Dynamic with an ROI spec, hence no alloys or climate control.

I've a 2002 dynamic with the original bill of sale as it had abarth kit fitted, the 17 inch alloys, abarth side skirt and spoiler, steering wheel controls were all options, the climate control was a standard option only on the abarth variants with other models having aircon. According to the invoice all models other than abarth were sold as actives with options to bring them up to dynamic level as follows

new stilo 1.6 16 v active 10336.17
climate control 255.32
stereo steering control 114.90
large alloy wheels 238.30
radio/cd player 102.13
rear spoiler 102.13
side-skirt 212.76
s&f no plate 21.28
road fund licence 140.00
vfrf 25.00

The more aware of you will note the road fund licence has gone up to 150 pa now, again had this one from a year old.

having noted what sets apart dynamic spec from A/C variants, whats the difference between Active Sport (which i own) and Dynamic versions?

the obvious one being i dont have color coded 'rub strips',

I have the alloys, Radio/CD player (in silver), Rear Spoiler and Side Skirts.

Active air-con come with radio cassette, steel wheels with wheel trims but had air-con.

Active sport has 15" Alloys and an in dash cd player but no air-con.

The above are without any options requested by the buyer or fitted by the dealer. Someone I work with has a 1.6 Active aircon but it came with side skirts and a rear spoiler fitted by the dealer before he bought it. Sometimes dealers do this to shift certain models quicker by making them look more attractive.
